<p>Does anyone know anything about the quality of the math department at Wesleyan? I like the school and atmosphere a lot, but I read in some book that the math department is considered weak, and I am planning on a math major (or at least taking a fair number of courses).</p>

<p>I did meet one of the math professors and I was impressed. I have never heard that the math department was weak.</p>
<p>Sigh, wish I was better at math. The higher-level stuff looks so cool. ^.^</p>
<p>There was some criticism years and years ago that it was too tethered to Topology (the highly theoretical study of surfaces) which was the Ph.D program's specialty. All that changed when they introduced the computer science major and folks could take math courses from both departments.</p>
<p>I'm interested in math too, and I'm going to Wes, so even if the department did suck, you'd have company!</p>
<p>However, the course selection in mathematics is perfectly fine and awesome, and just because it <em>is</em> Wesleyan University, I'm sure the professors are pretty good. But yeah... I really know nothing.</p>
