I was wondering if any upperclassmen had any information about the math114 placement exam...such as what is the passing rate?

Also, is Miller a good professor for LGST 101? What are some professors you suggest? Do you think a freshman would be able to do well in LGST101?

If you go on the math department website, there should be a link to previous math placement exams, and they have a bunch for Math 114, sadly they all looked very difficult to me, maybe not for you though, haha.

If you pass any course in that line with higher than a C iirc, you will get retroactive credit for all of the other courses in the series. Thus, if u start off with math 241, you can get credit for all three classes before it

Only take the test if you are not planning to take math 240 or 241 because you can get retroactive credit if you do that. Based on my final in math 114, I would say that to pass (earn a C or higher essentially) you would want to score somewhere between 63-67%. So a good thing to do is look at the old finals online. One thing to note is that in the course itself (when I took it atleast) the exams were thought to be very easy, so easy in fact that small careless errors were very costly.

Regarding Lgst101, I hear Miller is the best and easiest of the LGST 101 profs. I took it with Rosoff second semester. He’s a FANTASTIC teacher. He’s hilarious and extremely well spoken. Plus, if you put in the time, its an easier class to ace.

I’m taking the math114 test because I just want to get the credit, not planning on taking 240, so I can take stat430 in the spring.

Out of the three societal courses LGST101, LGST 101, and BPUB203, which two would you take? Being a freshman, would any of these be suitable to take during my freshman year. Currently I’m taking CIS110, MGMT100, Writ seminar, chin031. I can’t decide on a 5th class. It’s either one of the societal/organizational courses or a gen ed requirement.

LGST101 is a perfectly reasonable class to take freshman year. Most people will tell you to wait till your second semester to take it, but I say go ahead and take it first semester if you need to knock out another Wharton class. I’m not sure whether you’d want to take lgst210 or bpub203 as your second societal environment class. Both actually generally receive easier ratings on Penn course review than LGST101. However, LGST101 is a more fact-regurgitation class and I liked that, so I took it.

Thanks for the great information, it’s really helpful! The only thing I’m worried about is the courseload since MGMT100 and the writing seminar will be a lot of work outside of class. Am I correct in this assumption? How is the workload for LGST101? Is the grading just based off the quizzes and exams?

Grading for LGST101 is normally a test/quiz based class. My course was 30% midterm, 40% final, 20% quiz grades, and 10% participation. MGMT100 btw can be really hit or miss workload-wise. My group was fantastic…because everyone was doing work, no one had to put in all that much time…and 5/10 people got A’s (and 2 more got A-s). People who wanted to thrive on less overachieving teams had to put in more time to make their group successful and, unfortunately, some of them were not as rewarded for their efforts as they should have been. Writing seminars, I hear, are a mild bit**. I’ve been told Gotta Dance is the easiest WS, so I am trying to get into that one ASAP.

How about Prof Marston for lgst101? I could fit in Miller, but I’m much happier with having the time that Marston teaches. Any opinions? Also, how difficult is lgst101 compared to say, econ10 or stat102? Thanks ahead of time
