I'm thinking of taking MATH141H with Winkelnkemper, but I'm concerned that it may be over my head.

I took AP Calculus AB as a junior in high school and got a 4 on the AP exam without studying. Since then, the only calculus I've done has been in an intermediate ecomonics class (and it's been limited to derivatives and partial derivatives).

Can anyone here who has taken this class shed light on its difficulty, especially for someone with a relatively weak math background?

I don’t know about Winkelnkemper, but I’m taking MATH141H with Warner right now, and it’s been a horrible experience. I’ll be lucky to get a C, even with a generous curve, and I got a 5 on the AB Calc exam. If you must take MATH141, don’t take the H version.

Also, ourumd.com is a great source of class/professor reviews.

Yeah, I thought about taking 141H but I’ve heard the worst things about Winkelnkemper and Warner so I’ve decided to just take a regular teacher. If you really want to be challenged, I would go with Frances Gulick. She’s a hard teacher but fair. I love her but most of my friends think she’s evil.

If you’re just looking for an H-version, go another route. Leave math alone. Do any of you guys know if you can fill the honors requirement with just seminars? Or do you need some H-versions?

^ Yes, you can. You must have at least 3 seminars, but there is no similar requirement about H-versions.

I don’t agree about the H version math classes. I’m currently taking 241H with Macasieb and no one in the class has expressed any regret regarding their decision to take the H-version. She’s a good teacher notwithstanding her low ratings on ourumd. Those ratings should not always be accepted as a true representation of what to expect.

I am currently a freshman at Umd and I took Math141 with Petersdorff. The professor was a little weird and it is definitely a challenging class. Study hard and do the homework. I still managed to get an A though but it is very difficult. So I’m guessing that math141h must be harder.

I dont recommend taking it. My roommate took Calc BC got a 5 and then took 141H because of what his advisor said. He ended up dropping it and says he will never take an H version math class again
