MATH241 or H-version?

I'm currently an incoming freshman honors student. I'm signed up for MATH241H right now, but I just read somewhere on this forum that the curves for H-versions are tougher than curves for the regular classes. I know that H-versions are smaller, more discussion-based courses, but to me my grades are more important (I'm the kind of person who will learn either in lecture or discussions). Any opinions on this? Any experiences with either class? Professor recommendations?

How good are you at math? [OurUMD - Students in charge of their education | OurUMD](http://www.ourumd.com/)

First off, dont take Rosenberg. Check Ourumd for professor reviews. Dont take Rosenberg.

As for H versions, they really vary based on class and the specific professor. Calc III isnt going to be a discussion based course no matter what section you’re in. Its going to be nearly all straight lecture/example problems/proofs. The H version does not have a discussion section, so you will have to use more office hours or be better at teaching yourself.

I took 241H last semester, but my professor is not teaching it again this semester apparently. The curve was actually very generous. I got a 73, 66, 62 or so on the midterms, 80% on homework/quizzes overall, and got a B overall. (Killed the final though, but still a big curve).

Id personally take the H version, as its nice not having class 5 days a week. Had that for Calc2, hated it.

The two professors teaching 241H are Antil and Wolfe. I’m signed up for Antil’s section currently. I can’t find him on Ourumd. Anything about him?

Neither of those H version guys look particularly good. I think of all the 241 teachers margetis is the best, but it really doesnt make a huge difference as long as you keep on top of your work and can learn from the text (not always easy). And of course office hours.

Well the regular MATH241 classes are filled up now (except for Rosenberg). I’m pretty good at math and I easily got a 5 on Calc BC this year, so I think I’ll be okay.

You’ll be fine then cyborg. D1 rejoiced when she was done with math classes…the most annoying thing was that there was ALWAYS homework…you couldn’t really work ahead and it was always just…there. From friends/acquaintances who had various experiences with calc…just don’t let yourself get too far behind before you seek out help. As HF points out, take advantage of office hours early and often.

Thanks astrophysicsmom. You always have comforting advice and encouragement.
