Mathcounts nationals - include or not to include?

I know that it's generally frowned upon to include middle school achievements, but wouldn't being just one of 228 competitors (top 4 from each state + territories) be something that could set me apart from the crowd? Would it be wise to include it in my Common App or is it something I should just forget about?

Sorry, forget about it. Presumably if you were good in math in middle school, you then went onto do very well in High School math or science competitions, or maybe you branched to research.

If I were an adcom and saw MC on your application, and no other real honors in math or science, I would wonder what went wrong. I would wonder if you started slacking off. If there were a lot of great honors in high school, then that MC would just be taking up space. My son, who did very well in math competitions in high school (but did not compete in mathcounts,) ran out of space for his High School honors on the common app.

I would agree with “anotherparent”. I know kids who were tops at state/national MC and none of them put it on college apps under achievements. Presumably, you’ve gone on to have some achievements in math/science since then. Now, you could bring it into your essays.

Thanks for the help everyone. Thats what I was planning on doing, I know one of my teachers mentioned it on her recommendation letter. I just wanted to see what others thought so I wouldn’t be selling myself short to colleges :)

If a teacher covered it in his or her rec, you’re golden–it’s mentioned but you don’t have to deal with the should I/shouldn’t I.
