Mathematics Advisory Exam (MAE)

Did anyone take the MAE? I haven't taken Calc. and I forgot all my pre-cal and trig stuff. Was it a hard test? I don't NEED to take the test but I think if I end up changing majors to something that requires math, it's better to take it now. How should I study for this test? Thanks!

I took it it’s a two part test first part is algebra and second part is precalc. The algebra was really easy but the calc is a little more difficult make sure to study your trig values there is a lot on radians and trigonometry. Test wasn’t bad I was placed into 8b which is intro to science based calc. I recomend taking it so they don’t make you take a lower math class in the future if you change majors.

I placed into Math 22, Calculus for Business. Is this bad?

Um, I think you got placed in Calc for Business because of your major? (science majors don’t get placed in that math class)

I’m not exactly sure how it fits in compared to the other math classes though

Math 22 is more or less equivalent to calculus ab (if you had that in high school) but easier and like what the previous poster said, you most likely got placed into that math because of your major. Define bad…

Is it like the worst calculus? I am undeclared in CHASS. I took pre-calc over 2 years ago and I don’t know if I am ready for calc.

I don’t think that you can really call it the worst calculus because it’s specifically for non-science majors. I’m not sure about other CHASS majors but if you become a business major, besides stats, it will be the only math you’ll have to take. It’s really not that bad.

Math 22 is pretty ez. It’s just derivatives and integrals. I never even took calc in high school, and I got an A in this class.

FYI, math 22 would be the right place to start if you were a business major. =)

I just got an e-mail saying I need to take the MAE but I’m an undeclared CHASS and am not planning on taking any math classes this quarter. I don’t have to take the test yet do I?

I don’t think it matters whether you’re going to take math or not. It’s a required placement test.

Nah, I’m good.

I got placed into MATH 009A First-Year Calculus. I want to major in Computer Science so am I on track?

I ws wondering if your a chass poli-sci major can you be put in calc (9a)?? I haven’t taken the test yet.

I don’t think polisci takes 9a. 9a is for science majors…?

Math 9A-first year calc is the usual starting point for science majors

TonyThaTiger: Yes, you are right on track.

So i’m guessing getting placed in 8b as a CNAS is being behind then :/?

tehspoon: No you’re not. 8B is equivalent to 9a. It’s weird yes, but it is. The difference is that the first half of the quarter is focused on trig and the second half is everything in 9A smashed into 5 weeks instead of 10. which is just limits and derivatives.

So winter quarter if you’re in 8B, you’ll move on to 9B. assuming you pass with a C- or better.

Ahh thank you.

So i’ve been looking at alot of classes and i want to take general chem my first quarter, but it says that i need to fulfill Math 8b first. And since i can’t do that i won’t be able to take any of my other major classes. So what should i do?

If I got a 4 on the AP Cacl test what math would i be place into?
