Mathematics and IR...

Hi!I am thinking about applying to JHU,but from the college website I can't really discover a lot about the math department...
In terms of concentration, could someone please tell me how good is JHU's statistical math, and is it a major and minor at the same time?

Also,I've long heard about the IR major in JHU.But how big/small are the class sizes? And how are the intern chances?

Thank you!

To be honest, you real should do this research on your own and make your own conclusions. Let me help get you started with some very helpful links:

And when in doubt, ask questions of current students at Hopkins via the Hopkins Forums:

Thank you very much,Daniel!

I’m sorry,I was just disoriented for a while.By only looking at the generic info on the undergrad page ,I apparently didn’t clarify my confusion. And one annoying thing for me is that some webpages like your blog seem to have been blocked here.Believe it or not.

I will look through those helpful links you provided.
Also,I apologize for my saying IR instead of IS! ><

Have a good one!

What in particular do you want to know about math? Applied Math and Statistics is a major in the engineering school, and Math is a major in the school of arts and sciences. They’re pretty different.

@YanksDolphins :Thank you very much for your post.I figured I was being VERY equivocal in the thread.R u a stats major?

Although I read the links Admissions Daniel has provided ,among which several I’m unfornately not able to access,I want to know, from the current/former students, about the chances and places to do researches in applied maths and statistics. Are there many opportunities to conduct researches with the context of poli-sci or humanities focus?

Also I am curious about the workload.

Would you say the sheer mathematics major/minor in arts and science dept. very theoretical?

I will appreciate your answer…I hope my wording does not sound too ignorant. lol

I am a pure math major (and now econ as well!). My knowledge of applied math is limited to what friends have told me. As the name suggests, it s geared toward applications, such as probability, statistics, stochastic processes, game theory, optimization, graph theory, and the like. That is basically all I know.

Pure math, by definition, is theoretical. If you have little desire to write proofs, then don’t major in pure math because that’s pretty much all you’ll be doing. Minoring in pure math doesn’t require you to take algebra and analysis so you’ll do few if any proofs in that case.
