Mathematics major in UIUC

Hello. I have some questions about the mathematics major. I'm considering applying to UIUC next year, maybe for mathematics major. How competitive would it be to get into mathematics major in UIUC? (*I am a resident in Illinois (green-card holder) and attend to extremely competitive school in the state. Plus have pretty normal stats for now-- uw gpa of about 3.4 and 32 as ACT score. It might hurt me a bit since I'm an Asian...) And if I were to apply to mathematics major, after graduating the university, would it be possible to be an accountant first and then become a high school math teacher after I quit being an accountant? Or do I need to major in accounting and secondary education in order to accomplish those jobs? It would be best if someone exactly knows the answers! Thank you in advance!

with a 32 act you should be a shoe-in

Math (applied) majors are more likely to go into such areas like finance or computer software than accounting if they go into employment. Accounting typically involves majoring in it at an AACSB-accredited business school. There is also licensing, like CPA. Accountants do a lot of math, but it is very basic math, nothing like what a math major will do.

Thank you, ucbalumnus! I heard that finance major graduates can also work as accountants though. Then does that mean i need to study as double major to be an future accountant or so?

If you want to be an accountant you need to study accounting. It’s all about learning the rules/laws. As UCBAlumnus states, math in accounting is very basic. Majoring in math is very basic. Another more challenging alternative is to major in the quant side of Econ (econometrics) or major in math with a minor in Econ.

Finance is often majored in under an AACSB accredited business school, where there are required and/or optional accounting courses that the student can take.

Hi Fireworker.
Several individuals demonstrated through their replies that they have no idea of UIUC major and minor system. And you revealed through your question that you don’t yet know what you want.
If you want to teach math - you need to apply for Secondary Math Education at LAS, tuition rate, GPA, and test requirements are very different from College of Business, where you could select an accounting major.

It is more likely that you can complete a math education major, start teaching math, and pursue CPA preparation certificate - post bac program. It will be very problematic for you to teach math after completing Accounting major program.

Consider that you will have to pay extra $6000 tuition differential for college of business.
If you are asian you will fit right into Math major and Math club.

That’s about it, see you on campus.
