Mathematics Program

Hello! I'm hoping to get some feedback on Chicago's undergraduate math program from people who have/had some experience with it. One minor thing I am curious about is if they have an offical or unofficial putnam/problem solving seminar or if putnam is much of a big deal at UChicago? Thanks.

UChicago consistently ranks in the top 5-10 for grad and undergrad math programs. UChicago also has special major areas, like math + econ, applied math, etc. While I don't remember specifically whether or not they have a Putnam program (I visited back in October) I seem to remember that they do. A great contact about the math department at UChicago is Dr. Diane Herrmann, undergraduate coordinator. Email: diane@math.uchicago.edu.

The undergrad math program for math majors is fantastic. I'm not a math major, but I have friends who are, and I've only heard glowing words from them. They all love it. If you can, try to visit and sit in on Honors Analysis or Honors Calc.

again, yes, math is fantastic here, and the department is known to be rather close-knit, between the professors, graduate students, and undergraduates.

DS visited Chicago in January and sat in on a 160s and the Honors Analysis class. Loved it! He came home and said, "I could definitely see myself spending four years here."

I visited in the fall during an open house. On my way to the Honors Analysis class, I found on a math bulletin board a folder with a couple of pages with Putnam practice problems, so I snagged myself a copy. So, yes, I'm assuming there is a non-trivial community at UChicago interested in the Putnam.

Thanks for all your responses. One thing though, I see that they have a math club, but it hasn't been updated in quite awhile. Is that still running?

I really want to major in math next year. I've never been brilliant at it, actually my forte is english/social studies but I've always loved math. OK, not love, but I prefer that over writing a paper. Anyway, I hope I don't totally fall off next year...

Anyone want to comment? If I want to be a math major...

You'll come in and take a calculus placement test, so your math class will basically be assigned given what the placement test shows. Don't worry about anything else yet, Aspiring. College math is different than high school math, and college humanities is different than high school humanities. You will most likely find your interests change or shift a bit. You may find yourself breezing through math and loving every second, or you may end up struggling in math but looking forward to your hum section. In the end, if you work hard for what you want, it will all work out one way or the other.

the math club still exists and during autumn quarter they hold meetings where the sole purpose is practicing for putnam. im not really sure what they do the rest of the year.
