Matriculate? Which dorms?!

So here's the deal:

1) I was selected as a Carolina Scholar and am thrilled. Though I've applied to Brown and Yale (haven't heard from either yet) there's something about UNC that I love. I also think that the opportunity I've been given as a Scholar is similar if not better to the one I'd get at an Ivy (considering the $$$, my choice seems simple). Yet I'd also like to hear back from Ivies, just to see if I'd get in.

Should I matriculate? Or should I wait? If I do, what does that entail? And what negative repercussion might I experience if I do matriculate?

2) I'm not a drinker. I'm not a nerd by any means and I like having a good time, but I'm annoyed by kids who drink like fishes. That said, I'd like to be around my class! I don't want to make friends with older students just for them to graduate in a year (it would remind me too much of my high school career)! But I also love the North Campus dorms. Seriously, all of them. If I request an Honor's roommate on North Campus will it just be us in the middle of some seniors applying to med school? Does anyone have any experience with this? And does everyone on South Campus constantly party?

Any and all help will be much appreciated and I thank you all in advance!! GO TARHEELS.

First off, if you're trying to stay away from the big drinking scene, thats gonna mark granville towers of your list. You're not going to make friends with a lot of seniors in the dorms, most move off campus, hardly any students stay on for junior year, much less sophmore. I will say however, you will be more likely to find a uperclassmen in N. Campus.

No one constantly parties anywhere, however I will say that you are more likely to find some Thursday night partiers on south campus than on north, but thats not a big deal, most people go out of thursday anyway.

Yeah, I don't think I'll consider Granville because it's such a pain to reapply to other housing. I know it's supposed to be pretty neat but I don't want to go through the hassle again.

Are there personalities to certain dorms? My brother lived in Hinton James his freshman year and honestly I didn't think it was that bad of a place. I kind of liked the sense of community it had. I guess drinking isn't a HUGE problem to me, but it's not something I want to surround myself with all the time.

I wouldn't say any of the dorms have a personality, but i would say that the north campus dorms probably have a more studious group just because there are more upperclassmen there.

If you are planning on grad or professional school another thing to consider is that coming out of UNC debt free (or virtually) is NOT a bad option. There are many students at UNC (not just Moreheads and Robertsons) who have opted for the merit money and turned down HYPS etc. My S opted for the Morehead over EA at Yale and has never once regretted his decision-he's now a junior. There are other posters on CC who will tell you the same story.

Most of the Honors program requests for roommates I have seen have ended up in the new South campus (directional) dorms, ie Morrison South, Craige North etc. They are quite nice, bigger rooms, suite style bath and a nice mix of in state and OOS students. While every dorm will have its share of partying, there will be more like minded students in the dorms with lots of Honors program roommates.

My d lives in Craige North and loves it. There are a lot of honors program students, and yet the atmosphere is very social, even a bit boisterous at times. About the drinking...that's what is so great about UNC...there are ways to opt out of the sloppy drunk scene and still have fun. My d is not a drinker either, but she has always had some friends who 'indulge' and some who do not. She has been to parties and has always felt free to be herself...and she has found plenty of fun 'alcohol-free' things to do as well.

As far as finding peers on the North campus, I thought UNC was working to spread freshman and sophomores throughout all the dorms. Not sure how successful these efforts have been.

Thank you all! That's really good to hear. :)

I would opt for honors roommate and go south campus. You will most likely be put in a directional dorm, which like others have said, will contain mostly like-minded honors students, and are very nice. The buildings don't have as much of the cool historical feel that a lot of the north campus ones do, but they are more spacious, and only have 4 people to a bathroom.

cloying: My daughter was on North campus as a freshman last year and loved it. She roomed with 2 other freshmen (in a very large triple), and there seemed to be a nice mix of freshmen and sophomores on N. campus, too. It was quiet (more quiet than South campus), and close to classes. She chose to be on N. campus next year, too, as a junior (so I guess there are some juniors who actually stay on campus!) :) Congratulations on the Carolina Scholars!

Craige is on south campus and it has 8 to a bathroom... Craige North is nicer but when you request housing on the general form they only let you choose the community not the actual building which leaves you open for disappointment if you chose a South campus community and end up in a non-Directional house with no AC.

I'm staying on N. Campus for my sophmore year next year, if that gives you a clue as to how I liked my freshman housing experience.

If you are in honors, I think you get a separate housing form. My d was able to specifically request three dorms and the only requirement was that they be from different communities. I believe she picked Craige North, Morrison South and one from the north campus that I cannot remember.

I was in a similar to position to the original poster when I entered Carolina. Although I was not in the honors program, I was part of several other academic programs and opportunities. I chose to live on North Campus, and I also do not drink. First, concerning North Campus. They are trying to make North Campus more accessible to underclassmen so I have met several freshman on my hall and many more throughout my dorm (I live in Cobb.) However, I am also part of the theme housing (Connected Learning) there so there tend to be more underclassmen in Cobb. Since it is UNC there are smart kids everywhere on campus. However, I have found that many on North Campus are not only very intelligent and studious but are also involved in many things all over campus. I am constantly amazed by the things my neighbors are doing and starting up. Although there may have been a time where north campus dorms were all seniors studying all the time, I have never found this to be the case. Granted, we do a lot of studying but you find that at any good university. I think that North Campus is the best place on campus to live. It is closest to all the classes, libraries, resources, and Franklin St. However, the thing that I like the most about living on North Campus has been the people that I have met. 2) Concerning drinking. Obviously there is a drinking scene at carolina just like at every other university. I do not drink, not because I do not go out nor because I am opposed to students that do drink. I simply have no desire to do that, but I have been to parties and done things with friends who wanted to drink. However, there are many other things to do on the weekends. I personally really like music so I often go to concerts at Cat's Cradle or Local 506. Every now and then there is a big concert in Memorial Hall where they bring in very well known groups such as Roots or Ben Folds. In addition, Chapel Hill is a college town so it has many wonderful coffee shops and places to eat out. A lot of my friends enjoy learning different dances such as salsa, ballroom, contra, or any other type of dance you can think of. In additionl, someone is always holding events on campus whether it is informative lectures, performances by students and professionals, cultural programs, etc. Of course, being Carolina, sporting events no matter what the sport are fun. There is plenty to do, and even if you go to parties you won't be the only one not drinking... so anyway... I've loved my carolina experience so far... it has been amazing... hope that helps...

Thanks a lot. I'm filling out my housing form and was just wondering how many freshmen reside in Cobb. I'd visited it before and thought it was really pretty and generally just a nice place to live.

I think these will be my requests, in order of my preference:
1) Kenan community
2) Mo-town
3) Craige
4) Cobb

Anyone think that this is crazy/a good idea? I'll be requesting an Honors roomie.

While Cobb has students from all years, I'd say that there is a large percentage of freshman, particularly on the first and second floors due to the Connected Learning Program. Almost everyone I know in Cobb is either a freshman or sophmore. It was just re-modeled and is amazing... hope that helps

Cloy :

I don't know why you chose Craige before Cobb (Craige is nasty)... but Kenan community as first choice is the way to go. I live in Kenan community now...I'm a freshman... and I love it. My room is beautiful... just been renovated... hard wood floors, nice windows, etc. I'm recontracting same room next year...so that should speak for itself... and almost everyone on my floor is recontracting (mostly freshman, some sophs and juniors..NO SENIORS). Kenan community is beautiful, and the people are nice. As far as partying goes, I'd say there's different levels of partying on North and South Campus. On North it's a bit more classy... aka not too wild or sketchy. By classy I mean you pre-game at your room and then head out to bars or Franklin St (kenan dorms are practically on Franklin... actually Spencer IS on Franklin) You can also just hang around on your floor if your RA doesn't really care (like mine) ... If I lived on South Campus and went out at night, I'd make sure to carry pepper spray. But yeah, the overall quality of life is better on North Campus, and you don't have to walk up really steep hills to get to class, nor do you have to take the bus.

And even though I don't really party that much at all, I know this info because my roommate and all the girls on my floor do... so I hear everything

My daughter is going to Carolina next year. What do you think of Granville Towers? Pros and Cons Will she miss out on anything by staying there? Thanks

There are a number of comments regarding Granville in this and other posts. Do a search on CC for Granville Towers.

In short, mostly in-state with pre-formed friendships making it very non-inclusive, most plan on going Greek and do go Greek, they have their own meal plan which precludes one from dining on campus with other friends unless they want to pay as they go every time, very difficult to get back into the housing system next year if they don't like it...priority housing is given to returning students, and lastly have not read one positive thing about it in four years on CC nor heard anything positive (other than location) from my S who is a junior at UNC.

Ladyjournalistt: I was hesitant to apply to the Craige community, but in my Honor's housing application they listed out each part of the community in parenthesis. I basically crossed out Craige and underlined Craige North, which I've heard is pretty nice. One of my friends is there this year and it sounds like I'd like it there, although if I were stuck with Craige, from what I've heard, I wouldn't be too happy.

At any rate, Kenan sounds wonderful to me and I hope that I'll get it. I submitted my request relatively early and I think (I could be wrong) that Honors kids have some kind of luck in getting what they request. The 'classier' partying sounds like a lot of fun to me. I make it sound like I'm a little nerdy when I say I don't drink, but, you should see me watching a UNC game. It gets, well, intense. :)

I like hearing that there are a lot of freshmen in Kenan, too! I like hearing that a lot!
