Right now, I'm signed up for 3 classes that totals to 15 credits. I'd like to take one more class, but then I'd have 18 credits, and would need to get permission or whatever. Is there anyway I can sign up for 18 credits right now over the summer or do I hvae to wait until I get back to cville in late Aug.?

no one can be enrolled in more than 15 credits (upperclassmen included) until after all of the first years have signed up for classes, in august
also why would you want to take 18 credits your FIRST semester, you have EIGHT semesters and your first you should enjoy and be sociable, 18 credits would severely restrict your social life and i think it would be a bad idea.

Q: what’s the max number of credits you can take in one semester?

No limit, as long as your dean gives you permission. I have seen people taking 25 credits. I personally have been taking 19 over last year. double major across comm school and CLAS with 2 concentrations and wanting to get a CPA require me to do that… but I still got 4.0 for both semesters while holding a part time and doing research for a prof so overloading is doable. it just takes a lot more work.

oh no, im a rising second yr…thanks!

oh sorry! well you still have to wait until august, for the first years’ sake(s).

For all you incoming first years: IHateCR is NOT the typical example. I’m willing to bet my life that he works really effing hard to juggle all of that. The worst thing you can do for yourself is think that you are him. Doing overestimate what you can do. You’ll be screwed.

Set your sights lower, and work your way up to that. Don’t start your first year off that way because you WILL suffer socially or academically. One will give. I took 17 my first semester, but looking back, I didn’t know how screwed I was the first 10 weeks. I kicked it into high gear the last few weeks and ended up doing well, but those last few weeks were hell. And I went a little crazy lol.
17 credits is the limit for a semester. After that, you have to go get forms signed and permission from the Dean.

That’s true. I took 17 credits in my first year and I’m regretting. First year is supposed to be exploring. I changed from pre-med to comm+econ so I essentially wasted a year. That’s the reason I had to overload. Don’t do it unless it’s necessary and you know you have the persistence and ability to cope with the course load. It’s always easier in the beginning of the semester since there’s not as many assignments, mid-terms, papers at that time so you’ll be deceived that you can handle all of them.

Most of the time your dean won’t let you overload in your first semester anyway. After that, among other conditions, you have to have 3.5 (or 3.0 I forgot) GPA in the previous semester in order to get the permission.
