Does anyone know the maximum units one could take when graduating in 4 years? And does this include both letter grade and P/NP units?

I think it's 120, a bit higher if you're a double major.

No no no, that's not quite right. As far as L and S goes, If you were admitted as a freshman (at least for fall, not sure about spring) you have 9 semesters in which to graduate. There is no limit on the number of units you can take, so long as you don't take more than 9 semesters to graduate.

You can only go into your ninth semester for L&S so long as you haven't reached the unit cap by the end of your eighth semester. My counselor just told me that, but I don't remember what the exact number of units was (I'm sure it was higher than 120 though).

It's 130. You must graduate in the semester in which you exceed 130 units, or in 9 semesters, whichever comes later. (You can graduate in 9 semesters with as many units as you'd like, but you can't go much further if you reach 130 units.) The maximum units are pushed to 136 if you're double or triple majoring, but the number of semester freebies are the same.

The way L&S phrases it:

good lord...triple majors?!?!

Hmm, all of you have parts of it right, but here's how I understand it for L&S:

If you are graduating in 8 or fewer semesters, there is no limit to how many units you can take (except the maximum units per semester cap, which you can bypass with a petition). Theoretically, you can take 200 units if you wanted to.

If you want to stay for more than 8 semesters, then the semester in which you exceed 130 units will be your last. So, let's say after 8 semesters you've completed 116 units. You take 13 units in your 9th semester, which brings you up to 129. You take 15 units in your 10th semester, which brings you up to 144. Since your 10th semester is the one that you exceed 130 units, you can't stay at Berkeley for an 11th semester (there's a petition to bypass this too, usually relating to major/graduation prereqs).

Of course, let's say you took 200 units after 8 semesters, and you want to stay for a 9th semester. From the way L&S words it, it seems like you would be able to take however many units your 9th semester, but since that's the semester in which you exceed 130, you can't stay for a 10th semester. I think that's what dobby meant when he says you have 9 semesters to graduate.
