I wrote an essay that is three pages long double-spaced and I am wondering if that is too long. I didn't initially plan to write so much but to cut any of it out takes away from what I want to say. Thanks!

cassie: guessing, that’s about 1500 words. I HIGHLY doubt that submitting a 1500 essay would do anything but damage your chances. All it indicates is that you are unable to communicate a concise idea in 500 words and are willing to ignore their guidelines. While you may feel the entire essay is essential, your reader may feel “why did this person submit this big essay?”

Of the 20000 or so applicants, you don’t want to stand out for a negative thing.

If I may, someone linked this very insightful essay writing article:

Good luck to you

there is no word count indicated for additional essay. it doesn’t tell me to limit my word count in any way

Usually 800-900 word essays are daunting enough. Unless you are absolutely sure that a complete stranger would find every word of your topic as interesting as you find it, you should probably try to make it shorter. Concise essays are usually more powerful anyway.

I know it’s hard to cut down your own writing–I am guilty of writing long essays as well–so it might help if you got a teacher, or some other unbiased source (i.e. not parents and best friends), to edit your essay.
