...and now my school's foreign language department doesn't know what to do with me anymore. :P

I know that it's really important for students to take 4 years of the same foreign language in order to be competitive for admission at top schools. In freshman year I took Spanish III, sophomore year AP Spanish Language, and junior year (this year) a class that's equivalent to AP Spanish Literature (may be taking the AP exam this May; after all, we've read "Lazarillo de Tormes", "Don Quijote", and various other works in class). Next year I have literally no more choices as this is the highest level of Spanish at my school. Will only having 3 years of Spanish be frowned upon, or will colleges make an exception for me considering the level I'm at? Please help!

Of course colleges wont look down on you for maxing out your high school’s spanish curriculum in 3 years. Geez. I hope you aren’t just fishing for compliments. Anyway, a good way to show your continued devotion to the language would be to enroll in some higher level courses at a local college - Michigan State may be an option, given your Detroit location. If that isn’t feasible for any reason, then I’m sure colleges wont have a problem with your decision not to take spanish senior year.

FL taken in middle school counts too, it is the level you reach, not the number of years taken in HS. You completed the 4 yrs of recommended FL with your soph year AP Spanish Lang. Next year take whatever you like :)!

I’m in the exact same boat as you. This year (as a junior) I’m in an equivalent class to AP Spanish Lit, and next year there are no more Spanish classes for me.
Since my counselor and I foresaw this problem back in 9th grade, she advised me to pick up a second foreign language. Right now I’m taking both Spanish and Chinese, so that next year I’ll take continue in Chinese and not have a year without a foreign language.

You will not be looked down upon for taking an advanced track. You can see if your school offers and independent study Spanish 6–that’s what they do at my school for those who max out. They stick them in the back of a lower level course with more advanced work to do on their own. Ask your GC.

Otherwise, enjoy your free period! Take a cool elective.
