Maximizing My NYU Campus Visit

Hey ya'll,

I'm a dude from Singapore applying ED to NYU for Fall '10 and have decided to take the all important plane trip halfway across the world to check out my dream school. I've signed up for an information sharing session at CAS already but I would love to get a full experience of NYU and New York, basically the NYU behind guided tours, website adverts and glossy brochures and was wondering if any you could point me in the right direction? :)

For the record I'll be in New York for about a week in mid Oct, and would love to major in either Journalism at CAS or Media, Culture and Communications at Steinhardt.

Thanks in advance,
ken

just a university in the middle of the city with a bunch of buildings. no lush green campus.

Visiting campus can make it or break it for students, ESPECIALLY nyu (because it’s rather special, being in the city without much of a “campus” so to speak). Most people know whether they love it or hate it the moment they go.

When visiting colleges I always found dorm tours to be pretty important. Keep in mind that last year they showed me THE TINIEST ROOMS EVER (god knows why) and I applied for a different dorm than the ones I saw, and out of everyone I know I ended up getting the smallest room and my friends in the dorms I saw during my visit have rooms bigger than me (I know someone has a single the same size as my double, it’s depressing). So that was a mini-rant about room sizes but yeah, check out the dorms, and keep in mind rooms differ.

That said maybe just walk around washington square park and the surrounding area (go up to union square?) to get a feel for the NYU area. Go into Bobst and check out the Kimmel center.

go back to the campus at different times of the day. go in the morning during the rush of classes, maybe around dinner time as night falls and once at night. can you picture yourself there during all of those times? do you feel safe walking around? walk to one of the other dorms not on the immediate campus. how do the streets feel to you, is the noise a bother?

walk around the east village (not to be confused with greenwich village, look at a map) and try to picture yourself there.

notice the people around campus.

go to union square (six blocks north of campus, again, look at a map) and take it all in. can you REALLY take four years of new york, even after the gloss has worn off?

The last couple of comments were really helpful and truthful.
All I have to say is …
THERE IS NO CAMPUS. Just a whole bunch of random spread out buildings that have an NYU flag.
Some dorms are super large, and others are tinier. Some you can do cartwheels in, others have a little aisle in between the beds that you can hardly fit into. EVERY SINGLE ROOM has its pros and cons. So don’t get too judgemental.

being in the city is not bad, there’s a lot of food and things to do. never will get bored. plus you dont have to walk off to go to places.

on the other hand you WILL have to walk to get to places. :P
