And I don't know what I'm going to do. I currently am deciding between going to Northwestern and the University of Minnesota for chemical engineering.

While Northwestern is obviously more prestigious, cost is seriously putting a limitation on where I will attend. I would have to pay full tuition and room and board if I attended there because FAFSA did not award me anything. Whereas, if I went to the U it would cost me about 10k a year total. Not to mention, I was accepted in the honors program there. I also hear that the University of Minnesota has one of the top chemical engineering programs in the nation (for whatever thats worth).

So, I guess my main question is whether or not I would cripple my future by attending a state school like the U over Northwestern, yet at a fraction of the cost?

Finance is obviously big part of decision but if FAFSA didn’t award anything there must be some ability to pay for NU, which is much the better alternative.

While I agree NU is prestigious in some areas over UMinn, it definitely is NOT more prestigious than UMinn in ChemE. UMinn is nationally and internationally known for is ChemE, which is on par with top engineering schools like Caltech and MIT. While I don’t like ranking, I think this will give you a better sense of UMinn’s standing when compared to other engineering schools.
