May 2010- Literature

To all of you who are taking the SAT II Literature test tomorrow...
Is a class like AP Literature sufficient for doing well on the SAT II?
Also, this could serve as the discussion thread following the test =)

I took the test last spring and I am retaking tomorrow. I got a 650 the first time, I didn’t find it that difficult just some of the poetry was challenging. Just know the basic terms you learned in AP Lit and remember how to analyze short stories and poetry.

I’m planning on taking the SAT Lit exam tomorrow and after taking the only practice exam from the big blue book, I am a bit surprised. I’ve taken the SAT I twice; the first time I got an 800 and the second time a 790. I looked at the rarity of high scores on the subject tests (Higher Education Professionals | College Board), and figured that even though the students who take the lit exam are probably smarter than the average SAT I test-taker, I still would be in pretty good shape. However, on the released practiced test I got a 740. Now, while I understand that’s not a bad score, it still is less than I expected and I am now considering taking the US history subject test instead. So my question to those of you that have already taken the test is: have you found the SAT lit test to be harder than the SAT I cr? And has the blue book practice test been a reasonably accurate indicator of what you ended up getting on the actual exam?

Thanks in advance.

Where did you find the released practice test? Though it’s probably too late now…

I am taking it tomorrow, though I have not done a practice test and have not taken an AP English class. We’ll see.

^But you’re silverturtle.

@GripRoller: SAT CR and SAT Lit tests different things. That’ll probably account for why you got a few problems wrong, especially if you weren’t familiar with all the lit terms.

@imagodei: If you’re doing well in AP Lit, you’ll probably ace this test.

Wow, just took the test. Some of the poems were quite abstruse. And that may be and understatement.

But you’re silverturtle

I only found two of the sections to be difficult, one of the poetry and one of the passages. When does the embargo lift?

I found it quite difficult in general, and I’ve been getting 5s on AP Lit practice exams.

How difficult did you find the CR to be?

Not difficult. I’ve been getting scores in the mid-to-high 700s on CB practice tests that I’ve recently taken.

I did have time have time at then to go back and review my answers. I ended up correcting 3 or 4 of them, now I’m wondering if I should have let them be.

I think the most challenging part of the lit test is the fact that most of the answers could be correct, finding the best answer is a lot harder than it seems.

Just took the test…feel iffy about it. Could’ve been good, could’ve been really bad! When can we discuss questions?

Oh ok, just saw this. I guess we wait until they lift the embargo.

Same here, corey91. I had 5 minutes at the end, changed a few answers, erased a few and left them blank.

Check your PMs.

Ya, we can’t discuss actual questions but we can still discuss the test.

Once the embargo is lifted are we allowed to post the passages? I recognized a couple of them.

Hey imagodei, I PMed you something as well.

I feel pretty uneasy about this: after getting a 780 in Critical Reading on the SATs and an 80 on the PSATS, I thought the Lit subject test would be a breeze. It wasn’t.
