Hi, everyone, this might be a dumb question but its perfectly serious, not intended to offend anyone, i just couldn't really find the answer anywhere...do colleges usually have rules against students owning guns?

Many colleges ban guns from campus. I'd be surprised if there are more than a handful (if any) that don't.

This may depend on how much hunting is part of the local culture for the majority of students. MIT and other colleges have target shooting clubs, so there must be some authorized place for club members to store their guns.

Off campus housing isn't regulated. But if you're in the dorms (and perhaps even walking on campus), you're under the school's rules. I recall reading about one Yale student who faced serious disciplinary action due to his brandishing weapons and even drunkenly firing one in the off-campus in which frat house he was living. Even though it was off campus, his conduct was such that he violated school rules. What a waste :(

I live in WI. There was just an article in the paper about this. At 2 of the state schools - UW Madison, and UW Stevens Point - students can have guns but they must be stored in the safety office. UW- Madison has a shooting range on campus. UW Stevens Point has a strong hunting culture. They are creating an on campus kitchen where students can dress game. My guess is that there are other schools throughout the country that will allow you to have guns as long as they are stored in a locked facility maintained by security.

what about stun guns (tasers) or pepper spray? Are these regulated?

Nebraska doesnt mind students having guns apparently haha

You can own a gun and keep it on the Hillsdale campus but not in your room. So, you can have it in the trunk of your car - or in the storage room. Lots of the kids go shooting there.

I don't know of any tasers or pepper spray there though.

At my school we're not even allowed to own candles, even though they are sold at the school store. Candles can BURN YOU!!!

blazerblock- what schools are you looking at, or at least, to what geographic region are you referring?

California...or maybe some in New England
