My schedule conflicts, but I am not pre-med or anything Chemistry-related.

I’m not positive, but I don’t think you have to take the lab at the same time. I know someone who took physics without the lab and bio without the lab (took it later), but I’m not sure if the same holds for chem. I would think so.

I am pretty sure they are co-requisites, that is to say you cannot take one without the other. There may be an exception if you’d like to take just the lab, but I believe it is not recommended.

I would e-mail your adviser.

The answer is no, otherwise everyone would not take lab… hahaha

Yes you can. I took physics and organic chemistry without taking the labs at the same time. Most people just take them together because it’s easier that way, and to get the requirement out of the way. (Most people don’t randomly take gen chem for fun.) As far as I understand, some classes are “co-requisites” because they are recommended to be taken together. If you REALLY want to be sure, you can email/call your advisor, but I know many people take gen chem without the lab.

The question was in reference to Chemistry, not Physics or OChem.

my advisor says no

yes you may

If someone lets you do this, I believe they’re doing it wrong.

Adam, are you saying that people can’t take the lab separately from personal experience, or are you simply assuming from hearing from your “pre-med” friends at Hopkins? If you haven’t done it, and you don’t know for sure, you probably shouldn’t be telling people yes or no with such certainty. My response was in reference to physics/ochem, but many non-premed engineering majors take chem without the lab.

Maybe engineers are able to get the co-requisite waved, but I’m pretty sure I’ve heard Pasternack herself talk about this.

There’s a really simple way to find out, better than asking people on this forum: just e-mail the professor or academic advising. They will tell you.

Yes!

ie. Electrical Engineer’s are REQUIRED to take General Chemistry I, but NOT General Chemistry Lab I!
