May SAT 2011: CR Section

the answer choice read: “conservatory training SHOULD precede finding soul/creativity/whatever.” there was no evidence for that in the passage, i’m almost certain it was incorrect.

The answer choice was that soul (reworded) must precede conservatory training, which was wrong because the passage said that after learning the fundamentals, one must find their soul. I put demanding for that question. Did most put demanding, then distinctive voice after? I’ll be so glad if those are right, because reading comprehension is my absolute WORST subject :slight_smile: I’ll appreciate a 660+.

^i agree with dizzying

    THATS 60!!! 60!!!60!!! 7 MORE TO GO!!!YIPPIE!!!

okay but you guys are missing the point that “precedes” can have more than 1
meaning:

“to go before, as in place, order, rank, importance, or time.”

note IMPORTANCE. but i think we may be overanalyzing.

Also here’s the paragraph about the unrelenting force…

“The crowd condenses. It’s standing room only, flowing the length of the reflecting pool and down West Potomac Park. The floor of this church is grass. The columns of this nave are budding trees. The vault above, an Easter sky. The deeper Delia wades in toward the speck of grand piano, the stickpin corsage of microphones where her idol will stand, the thicker this celebration. The press of massed desire lifts and deposits her, helpless, a hundred yards upstream, facing the Tidal Basin. Schoolbook cherry trees swim up to fill her eyes, their blossoms mad. They wave the dazzle of their pollen bait and, in this snowstorm of petals, fuse with every Easter when they ever unfolded their promissory color.”

ALSO @saut, for the video games minipassages, didnt it ask for the primary purpose of one of them? or has the day break made me delusional?

@anothergalaxy
YEESSSSS, someone who supports my answer choice wording
but anyways, if that’s right im 100% sure thats the answer, it was supported, just look back in the passage that i posted

GREAT got the relentluess question!!!
@lord I think you’re over-analyzing the meaning of “precede”… now its just getting confusing… can we just stick to demanding being the correct answer???

@■■■■ It’d be great to have the exact question… i dont remember personally either… getting delusional as well. :(

@saut
i dont think its overanalyzing… “precede” is pretty widely known as importance and rank also…

but the conservatory DOES NOT precede in importance to creativity… and i was sure the choice was stating that conservatory DOES precede creativity… i dont get how that can be argued unless you’re saying its the other way around…

ANY MORE VOCABS MY DEAR DEAR FRIENDS???

exactly, thats what all the confusions about
you and dizzying support conservatory preceding creativity and me and galaxy support the other way around
2v2

Rereading the “unrelenting force” paragraph makes me more confident about choosing “undefinable part of the landscape”. I think the key is the line #s that are referenced.

The question was like “The references to water in lines XX-YY are meant to show that the crowd was:” I remember underlining WATER and then all of the water references in those lines… CONDENSES, FLOWING, WADE, LIFTS, DEPOSITS, UPSTREAM. If you only look at 1 sentence… “The press of massed desire” then it’s “unrelenting force”. Within 8 sentences overall, those words aren’t very “unrelenting”… instead a group of people has been rendered into an “undefined river”. We’ll see in a couple of weeks I guess…

@dream this question was MOST DEFINITELY relentless force and this was debated for a long time - if you want to see the exact passage, i believe someone posted this a couple pages ago- check again to see the words “lifting, helpless”

uhh i rmb this vocab “vocalization” in number 1. not sure its experimental or real.

@kiko what was the exact question?? someone mentioned vocalization before and i think it was experimental…

and i chose “important intelligence clue” in why people look at animal’s play or sth like that in whale passage
(hope this helps!)

it’s abt mother telling her children or sth like that…sorry i cannot recall the exact question

@sauter Yeah, I already read the posted paragraph…that’s why I posted my updated thoughts. Most of the debate on “relentless/unrelenting force” preceded (lol) @lord discovering it on google. I still think that quoting the entire paragraph instead of just 2 lines is the key.

This might be one of those CR questions that has a difficulty level of “5” (see QAS test answer keys) because <20% get it right. (That’s what I’m hoping for anyway…lol) Like I said, we’ll see soon enough.

Saut I thought in the whale passage there was something about pace of life. it was referring to a monkey

@dream: idk, but i still stand that relentless force is a good choice…
@lord: its already on the compiled list, but thanks!
