MAY SAT Discussion

think it was unexpected. what did u put for my question

One: the word factory workers only showed up once in the passage, and that was just to show that merchants were not actually the first to get to work

the passage was about the effects of industrialization on society, not working conditions

i said unexpected as well

unexpected...they had had a coffee break, and thnik it specifically said 'surprised to see them yawning"

One,

That was "unexpected," since they had just had a coffee break.

godot: the passage was about the ice age. at the end of a paragraph in passage one, the author uses a quote saying that clive indians were the first to settle America. then the choices were like:
present opposing view points
discredit a widely held belief
and something about just presenting info.

Godot: Well, the "benign monster" thing recalled my memory to the monster in The Grapes of Wrath, where the monster was the bank, or sometimes a tractor, so it's possible the monster could characterize something not treating something badly directly, but, rather, just something monstrous. Plus, if I remember correctly, following the 'benign monster' phrase was a description of what came out of the 'black veiled' whatever, which was basically a series of products produced from the monster...

So yeah, I think that the "benign monster" characterizes the manufacturing process.

the quote presented a common viewpoint or something to that effect

it was basically there to illustrate what most people thought at the time

Hey godot what part of buffalo do you live?

sibsagar12,

If I recall correctly, that was "summarizing the common viewpoint" or something like that.

likeatuesday and procrastinate,

You may be right about the "benign monster." For some reason, that choice just looked odd to me, but that may be because I was going on 3.5 hours of sleep and I could not have my usual coffee in the middle of the test. :( One probable wrong for me. I do hope the CR curve is generous.

rvbball,

I live in Amherst, but my office is in Williamsville. Are you in Buffalo?

I thought the benign monster characterized the manufacturing process as well. It could be considered benign because of the compensation which the process gave shopkeepers.

You guys live in Buffalo? I live in Alden (pretty close).

Haha...I don't think through the cr questions at all, going with the most obvious looking/best sounding answer...but I put benign monster=characterizing manufacturing as well, as the others didn't seem to fit.

Granted, the passage was about the effects of industrialization, but it focused on merchants and workers. The passage states that merchants care only for their own well being, completely obscuring that of the toiling workers. It also says the factory was a 'black-veiled' place where a customary order could be placed, and be received in a few days. This, coupled with the fact that the passage specifically touches upon the effects of industrialization on people, leads me to believe that a 'benign monster' lends itself to sympathy.

It is a benign edifice for all of the merchants giving them cheaply made goods, but a monster to the workers who must toil to meet the demands of the fore mentioned merchants.

And that was my logic

One,

I agree with you. Without looking at the exact passage again, however, I can't be sure of the answer now, especially since so many others chose the second alternative.

ecthelion1211 (why do half of CCers have random numbers attached to the ends of their names??),

Cool. Hey, you can get SAT tutoring from me (or my company). :D

P.S. Where can I get a list of formatting commands (such as quoting text or bolding) and smilies I can use on CC??

I don't know. The passage did not focus on workers other than their mention in the first paragraph, which was already addressed in another question [I forget exactly]. 'Benign monster' as a characterization still works as well. I don't know why it isn't that answer...what makes the sympathy choice better?

Godot... here are pages that have codes for formatting and smilies. Also, the random numbers by my name represent the year I graduate.

emyla: I chose the sympathy choice because of the author's focus on people not process

edit: ^then its because i interpreted the manufacturing process to include the effects etc, the whole process, not just the physical manufacturing

[/quote]

exactly, the manufacturing process benefits the merchants and economy, hence it is benign, while it is a monster because of the pollution (also mentioned in the passage) and working conditions

while the answer you chose covers working conditions, the passage covers pollution, merchants, etc as much if not more, and choosing the manufacturing process encompasses all of those

tarzan question in the girl passage: shows how little she knows bout africa
did she find the book "captivating"
was another answer like: book titles are poor indicators to how good books really are
