May SAT II test takers - Please Help!

To all those that took these subject tests in May and got a 750+ Congratulations!!.

Could you please post which practice tests were closest to the real CB test & which prep books helped the most in terms of preparing you the best?

Math IIc
Biology M
French
Literature

D is planning to take 3 of the above in June.

I took the subject tests last June. But, I'm willing. =]

I'd recommend getting the CB's offical SAT II book. It has 1-2 practice tests for all the SAT IIs. And they're as close as they get. The scores your D gets in there should basically represent the real score +/- a few points.

Agree with post above. Used CB's official SAT II book with great results (Got 800s in the book, got 800 on the real tests). Good luck.

For Bio M, Barron's is good for a quick review of everything that will be on the test. The practice tests are way harder though, I missed loads on them and got an 800 on the actual.

3 on one day in June?
difficult by the 3rd test but possible.
is it possible to take 1 of 3 in Oct.? that would still leave time to send scores.

barron's for lit!!!!

great defintions and actual literary examples of terms....while the specific terms might not be on the test, going through the practice questions in each section really teach you how to think and read critically for scoring well on the actual test. the practice tests are really hard, but it's good prep for the test.

i got a 780 on the may test=) (i was aiming for anything above 750)

Thanks all, really appreciate it very much.

We have the CB Subject test book for all tests and the CB Math one, but you get only 2 tests in all. (the one in the big subject test book is repeated in the Math only book) Can we buy more actual tests from CB?

She is in AP Bio and Precalculus now that's why she is taking them now, afraid that she will forget most of it by Oct. She is least prepared for Math at this time, so if she is not getting 750 by the time of the test, will make sense to move it to Fall and take Litt and Math then.

Bio is the one she MUST take now, Math or French could be postponed, and reviewed over the summer. Litt at this time is only a nice do to thing, so that is definitely for the Fall. Also, when she took the Bio M test at home, she finished in 45 mns and got 760 out of the CB book. She is aiming for a 800 though. She said after the AP Bio exam the SAT was easy, so for those considering taking both, it is better to do the SAT after the AP exam. Real confidence booster too!

reversepsych: did you review from the Bio Subject test book from Barrons and not the AP book?

I got an 800 in Bio M. in the May 2008 SAT.
I bought two books: Barron's and Princeton (I originally had the CB.)

One big advice: the AP exam prep books are absolutely too detailed for the SAT. It gives you confusion rather than help.

Reviewing with the Barron's SAT Bio helps a lot, a lot, a lot. But there's some part missing to it. Since you're taking Bio M, you have to study Microorganisms and prokaryotes more carefully: Princeton has a separate chapter for microorganisms. Also, Princeton's nutrient cycle diagrams and marine biome information are much better than those of Barron's. Other than that, any superfluous knowledge is not required. No need to review the AP books.

thank you pjh90zzang.

do you need to review any labs to be able to answer the questions?

Thank you

For Literature, any of the three big test prep names are great. Barron's, Princeton Review, and Kaplan are all excellent for practice tests. However, Barron's review section is a lot more intense than the actual test.

It doesn't matter so much what book you practice with, but how much--or, at least that's how it was for me.

Hi, I got an 800 for biology-M so hopefully I can help

She should have basic lab reasoning skills, probably don't need to know the specific AP labs. For example, she should know how photosynthetic rate or respiration rate is measured, DNA technology/plasmid stuff, enzyme rates, etc

If she has a lot of time, I would suggest Cliffs AP

Kaplan and PR SAT II books are pretty bad for information, the tests in Kaplan are horrible, the tests in PR are okay. The PR AP Bio book is okay for information, but not as in-depth as Cliffs. I would do Cliffs practice exams (buy the 5 extra practice tests from Cliffs), but that may be a bad strategy since there isn't too much time left. BTW, Cliffs exams are much harder (AP-level) but will overprepare you.

The best way to practice, if she has already covered all the material, is to keep doing practice tests. It's very detailed oriented so every mistake builds on her knowledge.

To answer the question about the CB book, I don't think there's any more released exams.

I know there's two tests...Basically, conserve it. Have your daughter take it initially and study what she got wrong. And use the test to figure out what's on it and what needs to be studied. Then, as the test draws much closer, have your daughter take it/check over answers to get 100% prepared.

Money wasn't a concern for me. But, if you want to stay true to the collegeboard's actual tests, I'd say this would be the best approach (especially if you're saving money on all these books!).

Thanks all. Will have her review from Barrons and take the PR tests since they seem to more closely reflect the content on the actual exam. I don't think she will start with Cliffs now, or take the Barrons exam and be spooked. She is feeling good about the 760 she got on the Bio practice exam from CB blue book. She did miss the ones which had a lab kinda question, which she will have to review.

Skatj: i will have her look at the lab suggestions you posted.
