I agree with re concordance tables and how colleges will look at new SAT scores. Collegeboard screwed up, at the top at least, and the scores colleges will get will not match up with the chart very well.

I took the percentile tables from the old 1600-point SAT and the ACT.

I converted the old 1600-point scores to new 1600-point scores by using the College Board’s recently published “old SAT scores to new SAT scores” concordance tables: https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/educators/higher-ed/scoring-changes/concordance

I applied the percentiles from the old 1600-point SAT to their equivalent scores on the new 1600-point SAT.
“True percentile” simply means an actual percentile of test-takers, not the bogus, inflated “nationally representative sample percentile” that the College Board gives you (meant to factor in students who take the ACT instead). Think of the SAT’s percentile as a “comparable percentile” (can be compared equally to ACT percentiles) rather than an actual percentile of test-takers.
@ivysource I like what you did with the table, but I think including ACT scores is misleading. As you said in a previous post, the SAT and ACT testing population is not the same. The latter is more heavily weighted with students who aren’t going to college…correct?
@bucketDad The SAT percentile is for SAT test-takers and the ACT percentile is for ACT test-takers, or the closest equivalent, since the exact percentiles don’t always match up. Thus, the percentages are more accurate for the SAT scores, but I wanted to show people the comparable ACT percentiles. It’s not a concordance table–it’s a straight-up percentile, but of two different test-taking populations, which explains why a 34 appears higher than a 1500 when they are in fact roughly equal scores.
Simplifying things, I told my kids and my students to just go and get anything above 1450 and call it a good testing day
What would the score have been if you missed 2 reading and no writing?
Hi @ivysource , congrats on your solid score! Can you please share with us on how to do so well on the writing and language section on the new sat? I got six wrong in this section and my score is 35/40 for that section
Thanks!
@Newmember27 Thanks! You can use ACT English sections for extra practice. They are virtually identical to the new SAT Writing and Language section. Also, Erica Meltzer’s books get rave reviews.
@staticjava I don’t know…every curve is different. Based on past experience, I’m guessing 790 or even 800 depending on the test.
If it matters, the only time tutors ( or anyone who cannot prove they are taking the test to get into college) can take the SAT is on RELEASED test dates. They cannot take it in March, June, November, or December because Collegeboard will re-use those tests for make-up tests, in school tests, international tests, Sunday tests, and PSATs.
@ivysource do you have any idea when the QAS for the May 2016 SAT will be available? I ordered it when my daughter registered for the test. It seems like a long time to wait for the report to come out - is this the same wait time they had with the old SAT? Do you know how the results are sent out - mailed? or sent online? Thank you!
They are sent in the mail, and no, I haven’t received mine yet either! Everything seems to be taking longer to arrive with this new SAT–even the Subject Test scores. Hopefully the College Board will be back on a normal score reporting / QAS timeline by the October 2016 administration of the test.
@LMHS73 Yes, it’s hard to believe, but the May QAS has still not been released, 4 months later. Check out the recently released official SATs #5 and #6, which are the Saturday and Sunday versions of the May 2016 SAT. https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/sat/practice/full-length-practice-tests
@skypeme, thanks for the info. My D recognized the SAT Practice Test #5 as the same test she took in May. So, she printed it from the Khan Academy site and answered all of the questions again. After scoring it, she was able to see (and hopefully understand) the mistakes she made. She also printed Test #6 to take as well. We didn’t know that Test #6 was also an actual May SAT test. Thanks for that little tidbit! I don’t know when (or if) we’ll receive the QAS report in the mail, but we really don’t need it now anyway.
Funny (TRUE) story: A lot of times we don’t get our mail, because the mail carrier puts it in the wrong mail boxes. So, I wondered if that QAS report might have been mailed and delivered to some other house. I called the college board customer service number in July to ask if the report had been sent out yet. Some very polite guy in a non-U.S. call center told me that the report would arrive at my house by the end of July. I said thank you and went on with my life. When the report didn’t arrive by the end of July, I called again and a very nice guy said “Yes sir, that report will be arriving at your house by the end of August.” When that didn’t happen, I called again the next month and a very nice lady in the Philippines said “Yes sir, that report will arrive at your home by the end of September.” So I asked the nice lady if the customer service reps are just told to tell us that the (fill in the blank) report will be coming at the end of whatever the current month is. She said “Sir?” “I’m sorry, I do not understand your question.” I just thanked her and told her to disregard my question - it’s not her fault, as she’s just reading whatever is on her clipboard. I’ve decided to just not call again…
For those of you who ordered QAS, my son took the March SAT. We waited 2 months for results, then found out it would be an additional 6-8 weeks to get the SAS (answers only available in March). Several people on the thread said they called to cancel their order, so I did as well. Customer Service said I would receive the refund within 10 days; account was actually credited within one. You may want to see if you can cancel your order.
@StillLotsToLearn - thanks for your suggestion. I called college board today & was told that I couldn’t get a refund because the QAS was mailed out on Aug 24th. I’d think that’s totally possible because my postal delivery service is hit and miss and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the envelope was delivered to some other house. I did ask the cs rep if she knew why the reps in the different call centers are giving out different info, and she said she didn’t know. She did tell me that they would mail another copy to me, so maybe we’ll get it as a Christmas present. Like I said, we really don’t need it anyway - it’s more like a game to me now to see if I’ll ever get my hands on this report!
I don’t know if anyone is still monitoring this thread, but I actually got D18’s QAS packet for the MAY 7th SAT today. Granted, we waited just under 5 months for it, but it finally arrived! We had no real use for it, as we had already downloaded the same test from the Khan Academy site a while back and D practiced with that test instead. I really wish College Board would have just granted my request for a refund when I asked, but they wouldn’t do it. It just became a game to me as to when/if I’d ever see that report!
I got mine in the mail on Monday. Thanks CB for your promptness and efficiency. I am so glad to receive it before I retire as a tutor (which will be sometime around 2040)!
