May someone please take a look at my appeal letter?

To Whom it May Concern:

I would like to thank the admissions committee for taking the time to review my appeal, I understand this is a busy time. As a prospective student of the University of Texas at Austin, I applied for admission with my intended major being History. Today, I received my rejection letter and in hopes of receiving an offer for admission instead; however, I do request that the admissions board to take further consideration of my application as I highlight new and important information concerning my application.

I understand my transfer GPA is not as competitive as most of the other qualified applicants applying to The University of Texas at Austin, but the 15 hours I took during my time in high school is not indicative of the hardworking, passionate student I am. During my senior year of high school, my mother fell ill with a case of gangrene; I became the primary caretaker for my brother while struggling to maintain commitments to my schoolwork, extracurriculars, and my family, which resulted in a B,C, and B in the three dual credit courses I was enrolled in.

I ask that my application be reevaluated, with a focus on the 23 credits I have earned the past three semesters (summer, fall, and winter) with a cumulative GPA of 3.391, including an 89.4 I earned in Composition I. My time at Austin Community College has taught me how to balance schoolwork and family commitments, preparing me for an academic future at the best university in the nation.

My academic GPA is not the strongest, but I have the drive and passion to realize my dream of studying history in The College of Liberal Arts at The University of Texas at Austin. I am serious about my education am frivolously passionate about understanding and exploring our past as a student enrolled in your university, I just need to be given a chance; do not let my past dictate my future.

I have a winter-term transcript being sent right now, did I make note of it in my letter?
my GPA from the start of college is a 3.391
is it good or bad to say I made a 89.4 in a class
I really want to emphasize how much passion I have for history (I know not too many people apply for history, so I want to stand out).

It doesn’t sound like you have anything new to add to your application, but it doesn’t hurt to send the letter.

If your recent semester’s grades are much better (like 3.9 vs 3.4) then you should mention that.

My winter class is new to the application, but i am also requesting that my application be looked at from a standpoint of when I officially started college (3.09 with HS, 3.39 w/o HAS).

@ssman512 I would suggest that you have someone review your letter for grammar, etc. There are some errors that should be corrected in order to make your best impression. Good luck!

Here transfer stats for Fall 2016. Your GPA is 0.23 less than the average admitted GPA for College of Liberal Arts. Because many people were not accepted to their first major choice as business, engineer or computer science, they were accepted to COLA instead. As a result, the average admitted GPA rises, and seats in COLA are taken up.
College of Liberal Art
1611 Applied, 1655 Admitted (the reason is some students are not admitted to their 1st choice, so they are admitted to LA), 1240 Enrolled.

  • Average GPA: 3.42 Applied, 3.62 Admitted, 3.62 Enrolled.

Unless you have many significant volunteering and extracurriculars, your chance is really low.

Do I post my appeal in the appeal explanation box, or do I upload it as a document?
