May Storm Damage

We have just viewed some footage on YouTube regarding storm damage on campus around May 15. This would have been after most students moved out of dorms but I think before graduation. It looked llike a lot of the beautiful trees around North Quad were heavily damaged. Just wondering if the look of the campus has changed that much because of the storm? The area around the Basilica was so beautiful, I hope that many of those trees were not too terribly damaged!

Al,

Do you have a link to the video? I wonder if that hampered some of the construction going on.

WOW! look at all of that damage. One of the speakers on the video said about 2/3rds of the trees were damaged.

But, it looks pretty fine. I just watched the live webcams on NDs website, and everything looks pretty good.

I was here on campus for that storm. Some of the trees on North Quad near Stonehenge were damaged. This has actually resulted in a more clear view of Stonehenge from North Quad and a more clear view of Stonehenge and the Library from LaFortune. The trees on God Quad were undamaged. The only damage in that area was the Southeast steeple of the Basilica. The look of campus is unchanged for the most part.

WOW- the You Tube footage is amazing- as is the footage of the actual storm that day. Amazing to see, and thanks for sharing.
Happy to read that the campus look undamaged- Whew!!!!!!

Red06--do you think it was a tornado or straight line winds with a storm? We are from a tornado area so we're used to tornado sirens and son grew up with tornado drills. He mentioned once this past spring sem that ND had a warning, maybe a watch, and his roommate not being from a tornado prone area, wanted to know about it and waht they should do. At any rate, glad to hear that everything is ok and you were ok. We have seen damage as was in the videos from ND like that in our area and it has totally transformed the look of a particular area!

While you could notice the damage, it really wasn't that bad (save the Basilica spire) and they did a great job of getting everything cleaned up for graduation. I was actually getting an apartment in West Virginia at the time and was shocked when I heard about it but really it didn't tear up campus too badly thank God!

It was a tornado just north of campus - - which is why only North Quad was affected. We are in tornado country, and have a warning siren system specifically for tornados. The procedure is simple -- during a tornado watch or warning - go to the lowest level whether it be the basement or first floor and get in the interior hallways. Campus looks beautiful as ever. The biggest difference is the lack of trees around Stonehenge, but that allows people to see the Library from LaFortune and vice versa.

What's amazing is how quickly they recover. We visited ND a few days this summer and were riding bikes around the campus. There was a nursery there with the hugest, most mature trees I have ever seen that were ready to plant. I don't know if they grow them that huge, then dig them up for replanting, or if these are trees they dig up when they do new construction. But I have never ever seen such mature ready-to-plant trees. I'd imagine that when the storm took out trees, they replaced them from this stash. It was amazing... These people are scary good when it comes to their grounds!

They actually did not replace the trees in front of LaFortune. But they are really good.

Someone told me that they were planning to put new trees on South Quad. Anyone else heard this?

If they put trees in the middle of the quad like North I will be furious. Very inconvenient for frisbee and football, etc.

Those were my thoughts exactly. I'm hoping that if it is true it won't encompass the entire quad.

There's no way they will break up the quad spaces on south quad like they've done on north. About fifteen years ago or so, some kind of tree disease decimated most of the trees on south quad, along the grassy areas. The trees they planted in their stead are just beginning to mature. If you check out the mini-quad in front of Morrissey, Lyons and Howard, the much older trees are still there. There are also some very old trees in the courtyards by Dillon, Alumni, Fisher and Pangborn. My guess would be they will plant new trees alongside the old ones, so that when the old ones go, the new ones will have gotten a head start.

No way no how are they going to plant trees to disrupt the frisbee and football games on south quad, which is what makes south quad so absolutely awesome.

I can't tell you what a bummer it was to visit campus for the first time a decade after I graduated, and all those beautiful shade trees were completely gone, replaced by these little bitty things. It was depressing! If they don't plant new trees in the Morrissey courtyard and other places next to the dorms, it will be the same barren shock effect.

The 10 year plan does indeed include a plan to add trees to South Quad.
