Maybe I Should Just Give Up!

Don’t be discouraged! I have a friend who got a 19 on her ACT and has D’s, C’s, and B’s, and one A, and she got a small scholarship to a decent state school. You wll be fine! As others said, CC represents the best of the best. You’re on the right track by being on here and looking towards your future.

well let me tell you something, you still have three more years to improve:

 • Study harder and become a good student.
 • Get involved in extracurricular activities and volunteer work, they are really useful when applying to a college-

Like somebody else said here, you can apply to Berea College of the college of the ozarsks. They both give full scholarships and you pay them by working in the campus and what´s even better, you keep the money! (at least in berea, you do)

However, none of this is going to happen if you don´t get serious about studying. Commit to all of what I said above and you should be fine. Even if you work very very hard you could also apply to an Ivy league they could give you a full scholarship too, but you have to proof that you are worth the scholarship.

I refuse to believe that in three years time that you have left, you won´t improve significantly.

My chances are dead. My Global History Honors teacher just told me that he THINKS that I was the one of the students who bombed his midterm.

But that’s just not finalized.

Come on. It’s one Global History Honors test. I get its the midterm. So are you going to sit online and mope about it? Whine about how your life is over? No. What did you miss? Should you have studied differently? Anyway, it’s not finalized yet, so you can’t worry about something you’re not sure happened.

You’re a freshman. This is the time to learn how to study, make mistakes, become better. My freshman english teacher graded our essays so horribly. All these honors kids getting the lowest grades of their lives. Now: We’re all excellent writers. But nobody sat in a ditch and complained. I found out what to improve, what she wanted to be better and did it. Now is the time to make mistakes, and more importantly to learn from them.

It’s good you’re thinking about college, and what to do to get there. But don’t be obsessed by it. Keep your grades up, not only for college, but because it’s a good thing to do. I’m not sure what my GPA is, but I know I have the highest grades I possibly can, and am trying to improve as much as possible and however possible in other classes. Join clubs or whatever you’re interested in. Show interest, get a leadership position. Learning German is a wonderful thing. It shows scholarly interest, drive, and ambition. Just take away the woe-is-me attitude. Self-pity never got anyone anywhere.

Never worry or stress about a situation. Always think about what you can do to fix it. Ok, you MAY have done poorly on the midterm. But you don’t know. So until that’s final, and you have the paper in your hands, don’t think about it. Your teacher may easily have been mistaken. When you do get the paper, if you did badly, go over it. Ask your teacher for study suggestions. Change your study habits, note taking style, whatever. But don’t whine on an anonymous online message board.

Your standarized test scores aren’t that bad. Practice for when you take the real ones and you’ll do fine. When people take the SATs they spend literally months studying from prep books and memorizing words and whatnot.
Regarding honors classes, sure more would be better. But right now you have excellent grades, and a presumably high GPA. Just see in the next couple years what honors/AP classes you can take that are interesting, and that you would do well in.

Don’t stress or worry for 4 years. Have fun - you ARE still a kid.

waitatshu has a great post. And is a great example. Pay attention to what he wrote.

i’m from new york state and i got rejected from 2 (almost 3) sunys. granted, i screwed up freshman year and didn’t take my grades seriously until sophomore year. there’s a school for everyone, and i do mean EVERYONE. i’m going to keene state college in new hampshire and it wasn’t my first choice (suny oneonta was) but its not really where you go; it’s what you do when you make it there  good luck!

A lot of people have said encouragements and I can’t say anything that most people haven’t already said here. But this:

You would be a first generation college student. That’s a hook in.

Also, I did absolutely nothing freshman year. I got C’s and whatnot.
10th grade and beyond, I turned my life around. I joined sports (JV, eh, all right), and various other extracurriculars. I’m in fairly good shape right now. A bit struggle but I could get into the Top 30s.

So, come 10th grade, throw yourself into extracurriculars. Choose strategically - aim for what you would love, but also would require talent or brains. Show passion, and work hard for leadership positions.

Sounds like you won’t have too much trouble with your classes? A+ and A’s are really quite great, you already have a pretty darn good GPA starting out freshman year. That’s great, channel the bulk of your energy into ECs and community service (unless you don’t like service, then DON’T do it.)

Oh, and with regard to your history midterm…

…Wanna know a secret?

I’ve failed every midterm to date. Can’t pass tests if my life depended on it. Still going to a top 30 (maybe top 40 actually?).

Depending on how much the midterm is weighted, you can offset midterms with straight A’s and a good final exam standing.

^This is personal, but I find it very hard to still get straight A’s when I fail midterms.

Clearly then, your high school teachers don’t have the common philosophy that as long as you’re trying really hard you deserve a good grade.

Well, in many schools a midterm or final exam is weighted 20% of your final grade - and some teachers don’t round…

Anyway, to the OP - please don’t give up! Focus your ECs and passions and you will definitely succeed. Don’t take the uber-crazy direct Ivy-league admits as your standard! :)

Alright. I got this. I still don’t know what my midterm results are and yes, my midterms are worth 25% of my final grade. My unweighted marking period overall average is a 96.06/100, so if in the event that I did fail or did poorly on a midterm, it wouldn’t completely destroy my average.

Alright. I kind of thought about this yesterday. Even since I wanted to go to a top school, probably before being on CC, I never really had a reason why I would want to go to one. I mean it was all prestige!!! And College Confidental did really challenge me to ask myself why I would want to go, because I have read so many chance threads where the applicant wants to go to Ivy, but then has too many low scores. Everyone is telling the applicant can’t go to Ivy, but the applicant always replies saying they refuse to go to state school. And I was like,“that’s so irrational!!!”

So, yeah, if I don’t have a reason to go to a top school, then, I probably wouldn’t impress a darn admissions officer. Anyways, does anyone know any good schools, but not too competitive, for a German major?

First of all, don’t pay much attention to the bleeding chance threads. What you have there are a bunch of very worried kids all telling each other what they think, based on very little real information. When the time comes, talk to your advisor about your chances.
Secondly, don’t worry so much! If you work reasonably hard, and get good grades/test scores, you’ll get into a fine school. There are hundreds of good schools out there. You will find one that you love and that loves you right back.

boy oh boy-- after reading this, I think we should make an age minimum for cc. I think HS Junior would be about right…

College is far away-- even if it doesnt seem that way. You will grow and change tremendously over the next few years-- and schools want to see improvement over time. The ivy leaguers are few and far between in this world-- and believe me, once you are out of school for a few years, where you went to school is not the end all, be all, of your life.

I agree with the other posters who recommended staying away from this site- at least for 2 years! Speak to your guidance counselor–develop that relationship so that they will know you well and be in a great position to advise you.

You have your whole life to be a grownup-- let yourself enjoy being a kid for a while longer!

One other idea-- start a charity-- giving to others gives much more to yourself!

^^^ I don’t want to start a charity. I would have no interest asking others for money. I’ll just stick to my European studies.

Okay, here are my first semester of high school grades (All Regents, Besides Global History):

English-97 (A+)
Health-97 (A+)
Physical Education- 96 (A+)
Algebra I- 98 (A+)
Religion- 100 (A+)
Earth Science- 92 (A-)
Global History- 94 (A)
French II- 94 (A)

GPA (weighted. school only does weighted on transcripts, report cards): 96.2/100 (A+ average)

Six A+ and Two As.

You must have a very high rank within your school. GPA is more important than test scores at many (most) colleges AND there are plenty of colleges that are test optional. AND…you have “miles to go”.

My D took the SAT in 8th grade. Then again in 11th grade. Her score improved by 250 points! AND…she took the ACT at the end of 11th grade and the comparable score on THAT went up again. Why have you taken the PSAT already as a freshman?

It’s actually now 5 A+, 2 A, 1 A-, but it’s high anyhow.

My school made me take the PSAT to get the ‘feel.’

get good grades no matter what classes you take, get good test scores, do some ECs you care about, have fun and you’ll be good

hahahaa well honestly, if u have a good gpa (above 3.2 and sat scores above 1600 possibly) then u can even get into private schools. I got into a private school that offered me a scholarship for over half of their tuition. I can give u specifics through a PM. but i don’t have like a 4.8 or anything crazy either. i just did stuff and had above the average i guess but not THAT high or i wouldve gotten into my first choice…NYU! : [ but thats funny u say u dont feel good about urself anymore cuz thats how i am right now and im considerin community but my parents dont want me to go there. in the end, u can always take out loans, or get scholarships. people who are really poor can get in with scholarships. money should never be an issue if u try ur best to prevent it.

… I thought you quit making these type of threads.
