Do most people study for the PSAT? And are you supposed to take it as a sophmore or as a junior?

The PSAT test, when taken as a junior, is also used as a qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship (US citizens only), hence the name PSAT/NMSQT. Many people take the test as sophomores for a practice run to see how well they do. Since the National Merit scholarship carries a lot of money at some schools, studying for the PSAT is common.

thanks for replying so quickly! So if I were to take it as a sophmore would there be any point in studying?

Only to get a head start for junior year.

And feel better about yourself :P.

tanman......its not for u.s. citizens only i think cause my friend isnt a citizen and he took it became a finalist and got a ride becuase of that??? or is it for citizens only cause im not yet a citizen and taking PSAT this year.

Sanguine, I checked and you're right. Here's the rule from NM foundation: "A student must ... be a citizen of the United States; or be a U.S. lawful permanent resident (or have applied for permanent residence, the application for which has not been denied) and intend to become a U.S. citizen at the earliest opportunity allowed by law." In other words, you have to be a citizen or permanent resident (green card holder). That's only for the National Merit Scholarship - absolutely anyone can take the PSAT test itself.

So basically I should study if I want but if I don't it won't affect my chance at a national merit scholarship if I take it in sophmore year?

anitapita123: yup

yeah green card holders also...
