Maymester Study Aboard

Rising Junior D just returned from a fabulous study aboard experience in Ecuador and encourages those entering USC to explore these kind of opportunities. Because of her major, an entire semester aboard is not a good fit, however the Maymester opportunity was a great way for her to see another part of the world, experience a different culture, assist a underserved population, and sightsee! As an honor's college student she was eligible to apply for a travel grant that fully covered the cost of the 3 credits and assisted with the cost of the trip. Trip was actually one associated with the Capstone program, but she was given permission to participate.

She feels the cost of the trip was a bargain (we do too). Air travel, hotels, transportation in Ecuador, many meals and most excursions were included in the very reasonable cost. They flew to Quito and spent time at a local center that is providing opportunties for the underserved populations in Quito. She dug holes and painted walls, but also learned about the health services and health care system of that country. They had fabulous opportunties to hone their spanish skills and learn about another culture and even were taught to salsa dance. They got to travel to the Galapagos islands and view the abundant wildlife, taking 2 boat/snorkeling excursions, hikes, and even zip lining.

The group of 20 or so students were led by 2 USC faculty advisors. Pre-trip meetings were mandatory as was a daily journal and after trip paper. D thought the trip was very well organized and run and would recommend other students exploring this and other travel aboard opportunities at USC.

Thanks for the information. Son will be starting in the honors college this fall. He’s looking forward to the study abroad program.

I agree completely with Do Ho’s entry! My daughter just returned from a fabulous trip to Taiwan. Approximately same size group and everything was handled perfectly! My only regret is not doing this sooner! My daughter will be a senior in the Fall and now I wish we had participated each May.
