I visited Houston just over a month ago and i fell in LOVE with rice university. I was pretty dissapointed to learn that they dont have a undergrad business program but i was just wondering, how does Rice's MBA program compare in terms of quality and reputation with other top schools like wharton, harvard, stanford, etc? Thanks!

According to USNews ranking, Rice's business school is in the top 50, though just barely. I would say the others you mentioned are much more highly regarded (though I hate to say it). But there's no reason to go to business school at the same school you do undergrad at, assuming you are going for an MBA and not undergrad business degree like at Wharton. So you could just go to Rice and then go the Harvard Business or wherever.

Agreed. In general, it is not a good idea to get your undergrad and grad degree at the same institution. Go to Rice for undergrad - you will have many classes that will prepare you for a grad degree in business - although you should probably plan on taking a few years after undergrad to work before grad school. Business grad programs generally recommend some real work experience under the belt before attending grad school.

Rice has to advertise their MBA program on freeway billboards.

In comparison, UT McCombs has a highly regarded (top 20?) MBA program. Rice is amazing for undergrad but oddly lacking in other areas.

Yea, but then again, I think I've seen McCombs school billboards too. I think business school just kinda lends itself to that kind of flashy thing more than other schools.

yeah I've never been to Austin so I guess I can't judge based on that, but I found it odd that they needed to advertise it, and all the way up in the Woodlands too.

well, i'm looking to get a degree in accounting so rice probably isn't the best decision (given that it has no undergrad business!)

THere is a business/management major, but i'm not sure what the focus is. I take it this isn't the same as accounting, so perhaps you are correct.

there is a managerial studies major, which must be taken as a double. that's the closest it comes. the next closest majors are economics and math-econ.

For MBA, go to UT Austin instead of Rice. UT Austin's program is more reputable and probably cheaper too.

I read somewhere that some students use the Sports Management concentration as a precursor to a business career although that may be too limiting.

I have heard this before but what are some of the reasons employers or whomever feel this way?

i doubt employers would care. the main argument used is just an advice argument that says that you should experience a different school.

Can someone go straight into the MBA program from undergrad?

Sure. But top MBA schools only accept applicants with significant work experience. So if you have minimal experience, most likely you will end up at a lesser school.

Would you say Rice is one of those schools that wouldnt accept a grad without significant work expierence?

Yes, Rice looks for candidates with at least two years of experience, and Rice MBA students have an average of four years of experience.

Rice's business school must have changed its policy on this. I recently saw an ad in the Thresher recruiting Rice undergrads into the MBA program.
