I’m currently still a high school senior, but I wanted to see if being a military officer would be a hindrance in the application process for business school (especially Haas and Wharton due to personal reasons). If all goes well and I don’t have a major slip-up, I’ll have an Sc.B. from Brown, at least an average GMAT score going into the application process, and have finished my warfare qualifications for the Navy by the time I start applying. Any feedback is appreciated, and if need be, I’ll come back in 4 years and ask again.
Why would it be a hindrance?
JMO’s are in top programs around the country. If you play your cards right, you can go anywhere.
Brown students have visited the U.S. Naval War College in Newport before. You should try to go to some of the evening lectures sometime. Pretty sure they were students interested in public policy.
@briank82 not sure… I just read something online and thought it was worth asking.
@Sportsman88 That sounds good. I didn’t even know they let undergrads drop in.
I don’t remember which lecture it was but it was part of the evening lecture series and there were about 24-30 Brown students sitting near me. I remember that it was one of the better guest speakers but that I was distracted because I had a take home test to do that night!
Dig around online and you’ll find plenty on the subject. JMOs do great in MBA placement and are highly desirable in industry … and veterans in general … but you still need to do well in classes, do great on the GMAT, etc. It’s advantageous in many ways being a veteran, JMO or enlisted.
no
If anything, it gives you a unique background that helps to distinguish you from all of the other applicants
HINDERANCE? It’ll be a major asset.
