MBA vs. Technology Management

One of these days I intend to supplement my science and engineering education with a management degree or coursework. There are, of course, lots of MBA programs, but there are also a few master's programs in technology management. The latter seem to be focused more on technology specifically but light on the general accounting, finance, marketing, etc., that make up most MBA programs.

Any thoughts on the merits of one versus the other?

I think an MBA opens up a lot more doors than a master’s in technology management.

Do an MBA with an emphasis/specialization in Technology Management. You get the regular MBA core but fill your electives with Tech Mgt courses.

Iowa State has a part-time program with a Tech specialization although it may be more IT than you want.

[Specializations | www.business.iastate.edu](http://www.business.iastate.edu/masters/mba/specializations)

One advantage of Technology Management is that it doesn’t require a lot of undergraduate business courses (which I have not had) as prerequisites. I wonder about the possibility of taking the Technology Management degree but adding an assortment of business courses, but not a whole MBA’s worth.

Most MBA programs do not have any business pre-reqs. Most MBA core courses are nothing more than repackaged undergrad courses.

This is from the ISU site…
“Do I need to take business prerequisites before my MBA core classes?
No. All entering students start the MBA core regardless of their academic backgrounds. You will not be required to take business prerequisites.”
