I just got a brief question about top MBA programs in the US. I have read that work experience is a must in many top schools along with good GPA/test scores. However, I am curious if heavy community service involvement can be counted as work experience.
Thank you.

Although, I'm no expert.

I would assume that your community service would have had to have been in the field of Business in some way, in order to get credit.

Even so, they may still want a paid working postion in the field of business.

You bring up an interesting point. If I were you, I would just check with the school(s) that you would like to attend

FrankieM, The work experience doesn't have to be in Business.

MBA Programs strive for diversity.

I'd bet if you've done something remarkable/extraordinary with community service it could count.

If by community service you mean that you organize and/or run charity events or community service activities than I would say that favors your business experience. If by community service you mean that you volunteer 20-30 hours a week because you are currently unemployed, than I would say no it would not.

Yes!

As I have said before, I know I kid who will be entering into MIT's MBA/MS program who raised a LARGE amount of money for charity for his bike ride across the country. He also worked for a little while and went to an ivy league school, though.
