My son just started his Kaplan course. He is taking MCATs end of August. I read in a lot of places that students get a very low score on their diagnostic test. Something in the range of high teens to low 20s. He just took his diagnostic test and scored a 35. Is this a fluke or did I just waste $2000 on the course? Is his score supposed to go up from 35 after few months of classes. That's kind of hard to believe.

Congratulations, you may have a genius at hand. But is the diagnostic test a full test? There are books that will give a full test and try that to see if he is still at 35, if so, I think he will do well in the real one

OP, your son did not need a course. I scored a 36 on the diagnostic and had very little trouble self studying for a few weeks before taking the MCAT. He should take all the AAMC practice exams and the self assessment beforehand to identify any weaknesses.

For anyone else reading this thread, take the diagnostic first (it’s free) then decide if you want to spend an outrageous amount of $ on a course.

@plumazul, I was afraid to leave things to chance and everyone was telling him that he needs the class. Live and learn I guess. But if he gets a great score on MCATs, I won’t be sorry. BTW, what did you get on your MCATs after such an amazing diagnostic score? His weakest area seems to be physics. That’s where all his errors were and he ran out of time on that section. His school didn’t have very good physics classes. So I guess this is something he can concentrate on. ORGO was easy for him. He’s one of those weird people that gets ORGO without any effort. He ended up with a high 90s in his ORGO class.
