MCB 102 vs. MCB C100A/100B

I was hoping someone would be able to offer an opinion on each of these courses and whether or not it'd be worth it to take the 100 series over 102.

My problem is that, quite frankly, I hated the Chem 3 series because of how little understanding there was in comparison to memorization. Obviously, you had to understand the movement of electrons and what not in learning mechanisms, but it seemed like there was a lot of skimming the surface when it came to explaining why exactly they moved in the first place.

For this reason, I'm wondering if it'd be beneficial or more enjoyable for me to take C100A/100B. From what I've heard, it kind of seems like 102 will pretty much be a more biologically focused version of 3A/3B, whereas C100A/100B might actually provide a more satisfying explanation for biochemical processes.

Any advice?

i’m in 102 right now and i have not taken the 100 series, but from what i’ve seen so far i’d say your intuition is right. it’s a survey of biochemistry and we don’t go deeply into the material at all.

i’ve heard that the 100 series is a lot more math and physics-based, so if that stuff floats your boat, i’d say go for it.

MCB 100 is more physics/chemistry than it is biology.
The second 2/3 of the class has to do with thermodynamics. Think enthalpy and entropy in Chem 1A much more indepth.

Consider taking Chem 135 if you want a more chem oriented MCB 102.

I took 100A and I agree with zjodak - the first third is about proteins/dna etc, but the rest is all physical chem. 100B is supposed to be more in-depth biochemistry though.

Are you an MCB major? Are you going to choose a track based on this?
