MCB major, journalism minor?

Hi, I was just wondering how possible it would be to major in Neurobiology (under MCB) and minor in journalism. I'm enrolling at UC Berkeley for the 2010 fall term under the MCB Neurobiology major, but I've recently become interested in science journalism and would like to minor in English or Journalism while at berkeley. However, I don't know about the workload that would require. I was wondering if any berkeley students that might be in a similar situation could give me information about minoring in a completely different subject at cal (e.g. how difficult it is and if I could still graduate in four years, etc.). Thanks for your help!

I cannot answer your question specifically but I can offer insight. First, I know there’s lots of people who major in one thing and minor in something completely different. In fact, I would assume many people that minor do pick something different because it broadens their classes and skills and can actually take courses in a alternate topic of their interest. Second, there is no minor for journalism at UCB. There’s not even a major for it, however there is a really good graduate school for it. The closest thing to it would be minoring in English. Here’s a link to it and what you’d have to do to get the minor: [Berkeley English: The Undergraduate Program: The English Minor](http://english.berkeley.edu/undergraduate/minor.html). Third, I don’t know how much more difficult it is for people who have a minor, but it may cause a problem in graduating in four years, if that’s something you really want to do. Classes are getting tougher to get into and since you’re interested in different subjects, few classes would overlap.
