Has anyone taken MCB3020 Basic Biology of Microorganisms with Sharon Ogden? If so, is this an online class? Do you just show up to class for exams? Also, how is the lab for this class?

yes it is an online class.

You do ~weekly (sometimes more often or less often) quizzes and assignments on online lectures. These constitute a total of ~155 POSSIBLE points but you are scored up to 100. This means that ~55 point are available for missed quizzes or activities and points missed for wrong answers to quizzes. Activity grades are almost always 100% if you did them and wrote a lot for them. The activities are dumb… they almost all involve completely making up your own microorganism with a corresponding system/structure/function that parallels real life.

4 exams over the semester. Optional cumulative final to replace your lowest exam grade. Normally 34 questions with 3 points each. You CAN score 102 on them and keep the extra 2 points.

Lectures are ALL online. You DO NOT need to go to a live class. You CAN go to an optional weekly review session for general Q and A which is held live in a lecture hall on campus.

Online lectures are straight to the point but very dense. They are slideshows. Memorize them. THE BOOK IS NOT NECESSARY. Take it from someone who has read the book, even when it was not necessary, for every class until this one. THE BOOK IS NOT NECESSARY. It is a waste of time and will sometimes even confuse you. When it comes to her exams; what her notes say goes. The answers to her exams are ALWAYS found in her notes.

Memorize practice exam answers. This lady’s exams are replicas of each other. She recycles a lot of questions and many “new” questions are twists on old questions. This material really is not that hard so she creates grade variation by using tricky question wording and also adding “more than one of the above” as an answer choice for each question.

Review sessions and Exams are at 7:20 in the morning.

Lab for the class is generally easy but you need to study for the quizzes and exams and work hard on the lab reports because there are not enough available grades to make up for bombing something.

The lab and lecture do not closely parallel. Lecture is much more about structure/function/pathways. Lab is much more about qualitative biochemical testing for the specific presence of microorganisms and basic lab techniques. In regards to the lab’s practical emphasis on qualitative testing, it is almost the same parallel as 2046 and 2046L, but this lab is easier.

Good luck getting a seat in a good time slot for this lab.

Thank you so much for the detailed reply!
