I’ve been freaking out about transferring to UT Austin’s McCombs. I’m pretty much on the border for requirements. Can anyone chance me?
Sophomore at UT Arlington
Current GPA: 3.558 (Has gone down from 3.75 in the last two semesters, but I explained the rough patch I went through and why I got the grades I did)
I’ve taken Micro Econ and one Finance class – Got Bs in both
I’m taking BUSINESS Calculus this semester – I just realized will they even consider that? I’ve taken two other math courses and received As in both of those. Does that help?
I’m expecting around a 3.75 and hopefully a 4.0 this semester
Taking 12 hours (macro econ, business calc, information systems, economics of health)
I listed that I’m planning to take both accounting classes at a CC this summer.
I used to be a CAP kid and definitely met the GPA requirement, but I had to drop out the summer before freshman year due to family reasons. Will they take that into consideration?
I’m trying to get a recommendation in before March 1st from a high school teacher but she’s taking forever. I haven’t been very social in college so I don’t have any professors who can rec me or extracurriculars. In my opinion, my essays were strong. I even wrote one extra essay on top of the two required ones. I submitted two of those three to A&M as well (one was UT specific).
I’ve also applied to A&M, but I REALLY want UT. If anyone could chance me on either that would be awesome.
I have lots of questions but any and all answers/opinions are appreciated. In my opinion I think I’m on the border for UT but according to web forums, it looks like I don’t have a chance? :-< I’m honestly worried.
What is business calc? Does it transfer as one if the required math classes in McCombs? That is my first question- have you completed the pre-reqs?
If you have and you get your GPA up to what you think it will be, THEN you are on the bubble for GPA. That B in micro is iffy. If your As are in non-business track classes, that will hurt you when compared to those with As in the same classes. A lot riding on this semester.
Without the ECs, I am not sure about getting past the GPA issue- yes we are talking about a GPA in the mid to high threes as being questionable. Transferring into McCombs is very difficult. It isn’t the be all end all.
Have a Plan B. Mays is very good and to tell you the truth so is UTA.
I don’t want to be the bearer of bad news, but judging by the information you have provided, it is very unlikely that you will get into McCombs. McCombs does not accept business calculus as one of its pre-reqs. You must take differential calculus and integral calculus (Calc 1 and Calc 2). Also, your gpa is a bit on the low side. McCombs internal transfer GPA cutoff for 2016 was a 3.7, and the external cutoff is almost always around 3.9. I don’t know much about Mays but from what friends of mine who attend A&M have told me, the business school external transfer GPA is around a 3.8. You may have a solid chance at Mays with around a 3.75 and good EC’s and leadership on your resume. However, if your goal is McCombs, you could always transfer to UT as undeclared or liberal arts and then try to internally transfer. I know many people who have internally transferred. It is difficult but not impossible. I hope this helps. Good luck.
