I'm looking to add another match school to my list and the major I'm interested in pursuing is business. UT Austin McCombs seems like a great school that I should consider, but the only problem is that I am from out of state. From the website, UT makes it seem as if it is nearly impossible for an out of state student to be admitted to McCombs. I believe I saw some ridiculous statistic which I guess the university takes pride in that they only accepted 20 out of state students. Is that correct? Please let me know what my chances would be for McCombs.

Out of State: California

GPA: 3.97 (unweighted)
Rank: N/A (but have taken a rigorous course load)
ACT: 32 (retaking)
SAT 1 (Best Combined): 2180 (Writing: 780; CR: 710; Math: 690)
SAT 1 (Best Single Sitting): 2090 (Writing: 690; CR: 710; Math: 690)

ECs (few but very dedicated which will shine through in my application so I don't think it will hurt me)

Speech and Debate - qualified for nationals, numerous awards, etc
Boy Scouts - Eagle Scout, many leadership positions

I've taken 2 per year in sophomore and junior year. The only AP test that I didn't take was US History AP. I'm sure there are only 1 or 2 kids at most who have more than 4 AP tests taken out of a class of 400 and that's only because they are 1 year ahead in math and science so they were able to take Physics AP and Calculus AP this year (which I will take next year).

So no, reasonably, I shouldn't have more than 4 AP tests taken.

I've looked at the average statistic for students at my school who have gotten into UT Austin and the average was a 3.7 GPA with an 1800 SAT, but that's just for the university in general, so I'm wondering how much more selective McCombs is.

you should increase your sat(cr+math),if you want to get in as a out-of-state student.
i am an international student ,and i succeed in getting mccombs with a 1440(cr+math)
i think it won't be harder for you to get in than i.
best of luck!

Hmm I don't know, I have similar standardized test scores(ACT: 32, M+R: 1380) and know for a fact I would not get into McCombs. It just seems your standardized test scores are too low in a college that considers rank and SAT/ACT above all, and since you are OOS, your SAT/ACT will probably be huge factor. Your ACT is only really like 30-40 points off your M+R combined.

Sorry nik, gotta disagree with you here. I know of people with lower sat scores by 100+ pts who got into McCombs-- though they were instate. BHP would be a completely different story, but I think you'll be fine to get into McCombs.

foxshox, why do you know for a fact that you're not getting into McCombs? I was looking at the BHP statistics and their average was 1450 on the SAT and I would imagine that the statistics for getting into McCombs would be a lot lower if BHP is considered so selective...

So, test scores are way more important than GPA?

Instate GPA is big time since they really do go down the ranks 1-10, but I have no idea how they do it out of state. I would assume they take it into consideration, but OOS its hard to guage how much they take it into account.

But yes I know I wouldn't have gotten in, based solely on the fact that I wasn't top ten percent, and didn't have a magnificent Standardized test score.

As a current out of state student at McCombs, I think you have a good shot. Getting in out of state is tough, but don't let the small numbers deter you. I think the 20 number is the number of out of state students per class that actually attend McCombs. I recall the OOS acceptance rate for McCombs 20% (about the same as other top business schools). Your SAT/ACT scores are good, but could be better so it doesn't hurt to retake - but I wouldn't worry too much. Also focus on the leadership positions in your application - that's really important for business. Best of luck!

just out of curiousity where are these stats for OOS students? I'm just curious to see where they post the acceptance rate and where it says how they pride themselves on so few out of state students. my apologies if it's 6%, but I asked someone at admissions and they told me 20%. 6% might be matriculation rate (those who attend out of all that applied).

it seems that it is harder for an international student to get in.
i feel extremely frustrated when bhp officer rejected me when i called him, if the admission rate is so low , i feel much better now
anyway it is a great school.

I emailed a UT admissions officer, and they said the number was 20. But the number is kind of deceiving because not many out of state applicants apply, so it isn't as bad. I don't think 6% oos acceptance rate is correct (that just seems way too ridiculous). As darkpenguin said that may be the final matriculation rate.

i think the 6% is how many oos students make up the class.

i'm sure there's plenty of indecisive oos students who apply to 5-10+ schools, a lot of which they've never even visited or have any personal connection with. because of all the media attention in longhorns football, college rankings, and austin itself, UT is becoming one of those "hot" colleges and for some oos students, their first choice or last or somewhere in the middle.

i wouldnt be surprised if the amount of oos students applying increases rapidly more and more each year...my high school for example had about 3-4 people apply this year..which is of course crazy since i live no where near texas (although thats not saying much).
