McCombs Questions

Starting McCombs in fall, a couple questions.

Are business school students getting paid on their summer internships? If so, does anyone know the going rates these days?

Are many business school seniors already hired by companies before they graduate? What's the earliest students have been hired?

Thank you!

Business students are sometimes paid / not paid based on who is giving them the internship, qualifications, etc and even if its non-paid, you are not gonna put down on your resume if your were paid or not. The salary and internship statistics are listed on this site: [Statistics - Employers - McCombs Career Services - The McCombs School of Business at The University of Texas at Austin](http://www.mccombs.utexas.edu/career/employers/stats.asp)

I’ve heard top students receive offers before graduating and not sure about the earliest students have been hired (that’s something I even haven’t thought of yet and I am going in as a sophomore). For MIS, I am sure you will receive a lot of offers because not a lot of students graduate with an MIS degree and the demand is more than supply, at least until 2014. For other majors, I am not sure and would not want to give you wrong information.

Personally, I’ll be doing an internship in summer of 3rd and 4th year, because by that time, I’ll have somewhat knowledge into my major field or at least most or all of business core courses completed. Btw, have you received a contract for housing yet?

I’ve actually pre-leased an apartment about 4 miles north of campus

Most business students are paid for their internships as long as you get an internship with a relatively established business.

This question really depends on your major and track. Most accounting majors especially MPA students all graduate with full time job offers and usually get them at the end of their 4th year internship. Not sure about earliest, but there are a lot of job offers at Mccombs you just have to decide what is suited for you.

Yes, most students are in paid internships, but start looking early, and personal contacts are extremely beneficial.

I’m not sure about other majors, but my son is an MPA major and is already being recruited. He has already been wined and dined by KPMG and PWC. No lie, when people hear you are going MPA, bells go off, example - we were at a wedding and a guy who is a defense contractor started talking to my son about the forensic accounting that the CIA, FBI and foreign services are doing. They are now in email contact and my son is looking into that as well.

Frankly, it has been kind of amazing the reaction that business people have about that major. My son didn’t know it would be like this, he just liked accounting!! But, thank heavens he picked the right major!!
