Mccombs SAT and Class Rank

I understand that being an autoadmit to UT does not guarentee admission into Mccombs, but what is the average class rank for someone admitted to Mccombs?
I am top 5.8 percent at a very competitive high school and my Sat is in the 2100’s.
Also, when they ask for leadership…do they mean actual positions like an officer. Or can you put down other ways you showed leadership if you do not have an officer position… thanks

Also my UW Gpa is a 3.85 and my weighted is a 4.85

Bump

Doesn’t have to be an officer position specifically.

@SlimShadyLady So I could just put into the description for the extracurricular activities things I did that exemplified leadership? Also does being in alot of EC’s(not necessarily leadership positions) help? Do you also know the average class rank for someone admitted into McCombs

Yes, that would be fine. An abundance of ECs shows a more diversified application, so I would say it helps. Everything helps, honestly. Can’t say what the average class rank is, but I have heard of people in the top ~3% being denied, with lower ranks admitted. You really won’t know your chances until you receive a decision, so stressing about it this early in the game will do nothing for you. Good luck!

I know of a student who is a freshman fall 2016 who was just at the cusp for top 8% auto admit and 3 SAT attempts could not get him out of the 1900’s (old SAT). Had some leadership officer positions in Soccer and baseball and got into McCombs.

@Thelma2 do you think starting an online business would be good for McCombs.
Also if you don’t have an actual elected officer position, you can still show leadership for that EC when you apply right? Like on the description section or maybe a resume?

I don’t recall specifically what the app looks like and all of the fields the app has for leadership positions but yes, you can send a resume that includes leadership rolls, that aren’t necessarily elected or appointed position as well as perhaps one of your essay topics. There are many ways to lead and show leadership.

Obviously, you are an auto admit being above the top 7% and you have a strong SAT score. A rigorous curriculum will also be helpful, like AP’s or IB.

Do Apply early and get your housing app in as soon as you are allowed, so that if you get your major (or offered something else and you want to accept it), you are in a good position for housing.

Do not be alarmed if you do not hear anything about your major until February. Friday of the third week of Feb last year is when a lot of auto admits received their admissions.

Also, @Thelma2 do you feel like letter of recommendations even make a difference if you’re an auto admit and applying to McCombs? Should I go through the trouble and get one? Can a rec letter ever hurt your chances

@Thelma2 so his leadership positions were not related to business. Also, does mccombs consider that some schools are much more competitive. It’s seems unfair that someone going to a easy high school can get so high but someone at a competitive one is lower

@Thelma2 5.8 percentile yes. A rigorous curriculum is helpful but I am wondering if McCombs considers that some schools are alot harder than others/more competitive. It seems unfair how someone from a 2A school that is less competitive and is in the 1 percentile could do better than someone from a 5A top Dallas public school who is in the top 6 percentile.

@Thelma2 Sorry for the overload, but does doing the housing app mean that you are committing to UT? I still want to scope out my options, but at the same time I do want to have a good spot for housing at UT…

@TheAvidSeeker Doesn’t matter that his leadership isn’t business related. His whole package will be taken into consideration. The student I know had leadership positions in two varsity sports.

A letter of recommendation is optional, and I would recommend doing it.

@Thelma2 So a letter of recommendation is weighted pretty heavily? I thought it was appreciated, but did not have that much of an impact. Besides those 2 leadership positions, did he have alot of other EC’s? I’m very sure he wrote a stellar essay also.

No, a housing app does not mean you are committed to UT. If you do not get in to UT or decide not to attend (say, you didn’t get your preferred major, were wait listed, offered CAP at an affiliated school etc).then you only loose your housing app fee. Only when you do your housing contract, are you committing. But you have to be accepted first.

UT could care less about how competitive your high school is. UT is going to dissect every aspect of each applicant’s application and what each student is made of from the top to the bottom and if they think that kid has what it takes for the major they are applying for. Then that student will be given a spot in that major. Whether they are from Highland Park, Dallas Jesuit or a 2A school, matters not. Does that kid have what it takes for the major they are applying for? That is the question and they know how to screen for that.

@Thelma2 I am just extremely worried that I am at a disadvantage because of my rank. I am top 5.8 percentile. I asked about if UT considers competitive high schools ranking compared to a less one because that seems unfair how someone from a less competitive school could be the top 1 percent, have a 1800 sat, while the person from a top dallas 5a school in the top 6 percent with a 2200 sat score could be rejected…or is that even possible? Idk, but i’m worried about the rank aspect, as I know UT is obsessed with rank.

“So a letter of recommendation is weighted pretty heavily? I thought it was appreciated, but did not have that much of an impact.”

I didn’t say that. I said it is optional but that I recommend doing it. It may help and it may not. But my recommendation is to have a complete package.

“Besides those 2 leadership positions, did he have alot of other EC’s? I’m very sure he wrote a stellar essay also.”
I would have to ask. I really don’t know.

@Thelma2 Just worried my rank will bring me out of the ballpark.

Well, first of all, the top 7% from a 2A school (which is like, 2 people) earned their way just as you did being top 5% of your class in a 5A Dallas school. Both of you are automatically accepted. It is what you are made of after that that is going to get you into your major. His/her applicaiton will undergo holistic review just as yours will. Now, you both have to compete with every other applicant based on what your bring to the table to qualify for the major. If someone with your stats is rejected, there was something UT found lacking.

Odds are though, you probably have a very good chance.
