Is there a disadvantage to majoring in Economics if i am generally interested in the subject but don't want to major in business? I've heard that you are basically screwed if you major in econ at UT and are viewed as someone who couldn't make business.

Anybody?

Unfortunately that is the prevailing opinion. This is because the majority of students who couldn’t get into McCombs, or failed out of McCombs, still are interested in business and end up in the Econ major. However I still think UT is a fairly good Econ school and if this is where your interest lies you should do it. There is a thin line between Economics, Finance, and/or accounting.

@texansfan1 Thanks for the response. Is it possible to major in Finance at Mccombs and then pick up a 2nd major in economics, or would that become too repetitive? Would an Econ/Math double major work better?

Also listening. My S is interested in Economics everywhere but UT, where he thinks he wants business with (he hopes) an Econ minor. He likes the idea of Finance/Econ.

Anybody else with responses?

Yes absolutely you can major in finance and minor in economics
Most people that do the econ/minor in math route are for sure going to grad school because most grade schools favor those with this path. But I think a finance/econ will work. You just can’t minor in mccombs is all.

What I mean is mccombs doesn’t have any minors so you can minor in finance accounting etc.

Is premed doable with a Finance or Econ major?

Yes. You just have to take the premed courses in addition to your major courses.

Elsewhere on CC there is a major forum that talks about issues related to different areas of study. The Econ vs Business question comes up there in general.

Yes @anonemuss but it is just a lot of work man but you can do it
