I've been getting a lot of PMs about the McDermott Scholarship since the interviews for it are coming up. Thought it'd be helpful to start a thread so that future applicants and parents can read the comments. Traffic to this subforum is pretty low, so we'll see how this goes.

The McDermott Scholars Program provides extensive financial support for each Scholar's education. The Program covers, year-round for four years, all of each Scholar's university tuition and fees. In addition, each McDermott Scholar receives a monthly stipend of at least $1200 to cover on-campus housing and other living expenses. Scholars also receive an annual book stipend of $1000.

The McDermott Scholars Program also will bear the expense of

* state-wide and national travel associated with cohort activities: McDermott Orientation in August and visits to our state and national capitols;
* student-designed international educational experience, up to $12,000, as part of the undergraduate experience;
* student-proposed professional development and post program assistance, up to $3,000;
* travel home twice per year for Scholars whose parents live outside the D/FW metroplex but within the continental United States, or one round trip home for Scholars whose parents live outside the United States; and
* Access to tickets to the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and Dallas Opera and a one-year membership to the Dallas Museum of Art.

McDermott Scholars also benefit from

* a close-knit social and professional network of fellow scholars and alumni;
* exposure to and mentoring from McDermott Faculty members;
* close acquaintance with and access to the Universitys administrators;
* automatic membership in Collegium V Honors Program;
* introductions to Dallas leaders and organizations;
* opportunities to intern at local, state, and national organizations and to research in a wide range of laboratories on campus; and
* a compelling resume for graduate school and other post-college pursuits

Post any questions you may have. I'd be happy to answer them. Hopefully the search function will bring people here. Feel free to PM me if it involves something more personal.

I know some private schools no longer rank students. On a college application you just indicate that your school does not rank. I imagine home school students handle it in a similar fashion.

sbjdorlo, I would definitely have him start looking at the McDermott Scholars and the Terry Scholars programs. The McDermott is one of the best scholarships in the country. Below is a brief blurb from an article about the recent class.

“The class of McDermott Scholars includes three valedictorians and two salutatorians and boasts an average SAT score of 2240. Collectively, the students are in the top 2.2 percent of their high school classes and hail from seven states: Alaska, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, North Carolina, Texas and Washington; and the country of Bahrain.”

In addition, go look at the website or facebook page to meet some of the McDermott Scholars. This is really a life changing opportunity and the students have had travel and internship opportunities afforded to very few other people.

I believe there is currently 1 chess team player. And another grandmaster that already graduated.
Math/physics, i would say about 1-2 each year.

here’s the facebook page link that nano is talking about. let me know if the link doesnt work

applications are due November 1 or January 6 (still dont really understand the point of two deadlines. i think they started doing this last year.)

hey. i hope this thread is still active. the 2013 app is currently open and i plan on applying. i am really interested in this program so i hope i get it.

if anyone knows, what do they usually expect? im in the top 10% of my class and I have exceptional volunteer/work (in the community and around the world) but my SATs are not that great but my ACTs are. does anyone know if they they consider the ACT equally to SAT?

also, what’s the difference between priority deadline and regular deadline?

i heard that if you are considered a finalist but not chosen for the program, you still get a full ride to UTD without the other benefits of the program. is that true?

if you have been accepted, can you please post stats? thanks.

Actually receiving the McDermott Scholarship is very competitive but if you are in the range there is an AES scholarship that you are automatically considered for when you apply.

Also you do not have to be in the McDermott program to take advantage of the Honors College including the Collegium Program. [Honors College Overview - Honors College - The University of Texas at Dallas](http://honors.utdallas.edu)

If you look around here you will see the high caliber of students UTD is now attracting. The school is expanding rapidly (over the last few years) enrolling students from all over the country especially since the wonderful new freshman dorms have been built.

stats arent everything. Once you are above a certain threshold, you should be fine. That is when the other parts of your applications will help you out a lot more. I’m sure they consider the act score as equivalent to sat. I actually dont even remember if I sent in my sat score to utd.

i have no idea what the difference between priority and regular deadline is. this is something that was started in the past year or two.

If you make finalist, you pretty much have all the qualifications for the highest AES scholarship. Not a guarantee though (not 100% sure).

My stats were: top 1% and had a perfect act score. This was 4 years ago.

o and just fyi. i looked at your past post where you mentioned you were going to apply to bs/md programs. you cant be in both the ut pact and mcdermott. if you are in the fortunate position of choosing between mcdermott and bs/md in the spring, choose mcdermott (my biased opinion since i believe getting into med school the traditional route is better and more fun haha).

I just submitted my application and I am VERY nervous. I’m kind of worried that I won’t measure up against some of the other applicants, especially since I don’t yet know my most recent SAT/ACT scores.
I hope the mini essays carry a lot of weight. I spent a great deal of time on mine and it’s all I have to make up for my not exceptional scores.
I realize none of this was a question. I just didn’t see the need to make another virtually identical thread. And people need to know about my hopes and worries.

You can be whatever major/be in any school. I dont think there is a min standardized test score. I know they say that scholars usually have above a certain score, but I doubt that is set in stone or anything.

good luck unseen. if you make it to the interview round and have any ques, def let me know.

^What are your scores? If they are even close, then you should try for the program. You never know…
It depends on a lot of other factors too. Community service, club activities, essays, etc.
