McGill Admission - cell phone

My daughter just got into McGill. I am from New York and we currently have Verizon phone service. Should she get a new phone in Canada since most of her texts and calls will likely be with her friends at McGill. Has anyone dealt with this issue?

Find out if they have Verizon service near McGill, and see how the reception is. If there’s service, and it’s decent, no need to change, unless your plan charges extra for all LD calls & texts.

If you have unlimited LD, and plenty of text leeway, then you don’t have a problem.

She should probably switch to either a Bell, Rogers, or Telus phone. A three year contract shouldn’t be a problem. Or, if funding is a problem, go prepaid.

Another option is to see if you can pick up Verizon’s “Plus Canada” option. But that may be a little pricey.

She should talk to some American upper-class students there (i.e., juniors and seniors, not rich people). My daughter’s best high school friend is at McGill. It took them a year or so to figure out what worked best. I’m pretty sure the friend got a Canadian plan that lets her call U.S. numbers cheaply, and (after some horrific cell phone bills) my daughter got a pre-paid phone card account that let her call her friend (from her cell, natch) for under $.05/minute, which is what I think the friend’s family does, too.
