mcgill admissions

how important are SAT I and II scores and AP exam scores at mcgill. Their website has low minimum scores so does that mean they dont really care. Also what is a good minimum GPA for admissions to mcgill sciences or arts and science? weighted and unweighted? Thank you.

anyone have any insights?

look at the "post your stats" post, it will tell you what the people who got in had.

i have looked at that post and there is a wide range of grades/scores so i am still not sure wether people use mcgill as safety or match or so on. I am trying to find out a base gpa weighted and unweighted for sciences and arts and sciences. Also how important are SAT I and II because McGill has low minimums? Thank you.

The way I see it, you have to have a pretty solid GPA and a pretty solid SAT (and SAT II) score. And if one is lacking, then the other better be good.
Also, keep in mind, its easier to get into Arts than Science than ArtSci. It also probably depends on where you are from and what your extra curriculars are.

well what do you mean by solid? Also i have heard that science is easier to get into that arts. I have roughly a 3.5 uw GPA in all honors and AP classes. My weighted GPA is about 4.8. I have not taken any regular track classes. And by the time i graduate i will have 9 AP's. Also i rank about 15 out of 160 so i just make top 10%. My SAT I are Math- 710 , Reading-740. My SAT II's are most likely gonna be 710 for math level one, bio and prob higher for US history. And i want to apply to science and artssci. Are my scores "solid"for Mcgill. How should i treat mcgill match or reach? Thank you.

also im from philly and i heard that extra co. dont matter for mcgill

you should treat mcgill as a match.

are you from the US (i'm assuming since you take AP's and SATs)
are you in 11th or 12 grade?

one thing about applying - i would apply to arts, sci and artssci (its no extra work or money), (you can always transfer internally)

i'm from NJ (my dad lives near phili [in the main line]). I dont think i could say that extra curriculars dont matter, but unlike American universities, the application does not have any essays for yoou to talk about your extra curricular activities. what i did was, i had the leader of my youth movement write me a letter of recommendation, so i had 3 recs, not 2.

i am in 11th grade and im planning applying there next yr as one of my top choices. I thought u were only allowed to apply to two faculties so since i wanna do pre med it would be for me science and artsci. I am a canadian citizen living in the US. Would that help in any way. Are you going to mcgill if so what faculty and what are ur scores? Thank you.

hmm i dont know if there is a limit, but i guess there is.

i'm going for faculty of science (either chemistry or math).

i dont know if the fact that you are a canadian citizen is going to help yoou, but it will make it easier because you wont have to deal with immigration forms (which are majorly annoying).

also, my scores can eb found in the "post your scores" thread.
i just dont feel like typing them out again

with your grades i assume u treated mcgill as a safety/match? Y did u decide to go to mcgill. What other schools u applied to/got in to/rejected from? Thanks.

err..
i treated mcgill as a match/reach.

Unfortunately, this year was incredibly hard for college admissions in the US.

i applied to 9 schools

Barnard - Rejected
Columbia - rejected
mcgill - accepted
Johns hopkins -- rejected
BU - waitlisted
Brandeis - rejected
penn state - accepted
rutgers - accepted
nyu - rejected

so it was really between pennstate/rutgers/mcgill
and obviously, i chose mcgill

it seemed like u had good marks so how did u get waitlisted at BU which is not that tough of a school to get into. Also with NYU i would have assumed u would have gotten in, people with much worse scores got in there.

thanks --

the thing with BU is - i go to a really competitive school, and its a major safety school for the top 15% of my class, so i think i got waitlisted simply because of the sheer numbers of people that applied from my high school

the problem with NYU is that the unweigh your GPA, so that way you are penalized if you take hard courses, which is exactly what i did.

with the scores and grades i mentioned earlier should i treat NYU as a match or maybe a match/reach and if u no anything about carnegie mellon or emory how should i treat those schools. Because i just assumed NYU to be a match. But if they dont take into account APs and honors i mite be screwed because my UW GPA isnt amazing or anything but with the fact that i took ALL honrs and AP mite boost the view of my gpa.

Heres the scale i'm going to use
5 - Reach
4 - Match/Reach
3- Match
2 - Safety/Match
1 - Safety

Nyu- 2
Carnegie Mellon (CMU) - 4.5
Emory - 4.5
Johns Hopkins would probably be a 4
would you consider Berkeley, it would be a 5, but a great school.

with that said, just because a school is a 4 or a 5, it doesnt mean you can't get in, you probably could,

how many scchoools are you planning on applying to?

i know that the average around my school is between 7 and 11

(2 safety, 1 Super reach (dream school), 2 - 4 target, 2 - 4 reach)

i was planning on applying to cornell ED , u of chicago, northwestern, mcgill, nyu, emory, carnegie mellon, vanderbilt or uva, and then BU/Pitt/maryland/penn state (in state) as my safeties. But since u recommend emory andcarnegie mellon as pretty much reaches i mite need some more matches. Perferebally somewhere cold though. Berkely is a good school but i have no desire to go to california. Also i like schools in cities. My top choices rite now are cornell and mcgill and i want to do pre med. Thanks
