Hey, I visited Montreal recently and sort of had an epiphany that it was where I'd want to go live, and go to school, and after visiting McGill I felt the same way... I'm a high school senior from northern NJ that will be entering in fall 2012. Just wondering what you guys think my admissions chances are-

I will most likely be majoring in History with a minor in Anthropology- I want to be an archaeologist.
I'm a lower middle class white male, northern NJ.
I'm all state in swimming and baseball.
I'm the President of my Keystone Club, member of NHS, have hundreds of hours of community service.

SATs: 730 CR, 700 W, 570 M or 2000/2400, 1300/2000 (yes, I know my math sucks and brings my app down significantly)

SAT IIs: World History 770, Literature 660

AP US History Exam: 5

GPA: 90/100 unweighted, 94/100 weighted (about 3.5 UW, 3.9 W)

Anything else you need lmk, and please reply because I'd really like to get in here- thanks!!

by the way, my class rank is 86/746.

Mcgill doesn’t care about anything outside the realm of academic achievement for undergraduate admission, I’m afraid. 1300 isn’t a great SAT score but less and less emphasis is being placed on it over high school marks. And yours seem fairly strong. A 3.6 GPA would give you an excellent shot at any program and university in Canada. Your chances are pretty good. Last time I checked, I think the cutoff (or was it average?) admission into mcgill arts was 86.8 or something close to that number.

Also note, there are numbers to back it up when the claim is made that the academic bar is set lower for international students. Mcgill is struggling for money so admitting many international students boosts their revenue through inflated tuition fees. You will be no exception.

I was admitted as a Canadian student with similar grades (minus SAT) and I imagine you stand a good chance as well. Remember though, you are NEVER guaranteed. Your chances are NEVER 100%. So hope for the best, expect the worst.

thanks, chrisss1… anyone else have thoughts or advice?

have you looked at the act? maybe your math will be higher there. or try the sat II math 1 or 2. that scale is more generous than the sat I math. i would also try to have to have both sat IIs over 700
