Does anyone have any insight on McGill’s reliance on ACT vs. GPA? I know that they are both pretty important, but I have a higher ACT (34), yet a lower GPA due to a very rigorous high school, with an upward trend in grades (3.75ish). I know some people had to wait until May last year!
Well we are joining the Mid Year Grades requested club. D18 got an email tonight requesting mid year grades when available so officially in “Further Review Required” status now. More to follow . . .
@ShrimpBurrito Same for me. 3.8 UW, 31 ACT, 5 APs… I’m applying to arts and arts and sciences btw
Do you think applying for major scholarships affects whether or not you get the “further review required” notification? I didn’t apply for a major scholarship, so I’m hoping I’ll hear back sooner.
@glblhealthnerd I don’t imagine it does, considering that the application for the major entrance scholarship isn’t due until January 22nd (at least for US students).
@glblhealthnerd don’t think so either - my D got the request for mid yr grades and did not apply for scholarships. With that said, it does not mean you won’t bypass this step.
Never mind, haha. Just got a “Further Review Required” notification
This is very interesting. @glblhealthnerd I saw your (very good!) stats on another thread. Historically, McGill would likely have accepted you in the first round. My D, too, who has almost identical stats. Is this a new pattern? We’ve only gotten one second-hand report of someone being accepted so far. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds.
Admitted Pending Final Results!!!

@endlessshrimp Congrats! If I might ask, when did you apply?
@cawledgecollege4 Thank you! November 14, but I didn’t have my letter of extenuating circumstances in until November 22. My SAT also arrived later than my ACT.
@endlessshrimp Congratulations!
I know McGill often requires 1st semester grades. I go to a trimester school though, so I sent in my 1st trimester grades, which were finalized a few weeks ago. Anyone know if they usually request 2nd tri grades too, which will be released in mid-February?
@rueece i go to a trimester school too! and my college counselor said that students from my school usually hear back in december so i’m assuming they won’t ask for 2nd term grades??
So I’m an American applicant and grades are as follows:
3.8 UW at private school
35 ACT
My school runs on trimesters, and after submitting trimester 1 gradesI was admitted into the Faculty of Science yesterday, however for the Faculty of Engineering I am Further Review Required, and have to submit trimester 2 grades.
A little odd if you ask me, because the admission requirements for both faculties are listed as the same. Guess I can’t senior slump though.
@endlesshrimp Congrats! Did you upload any first quarter grades? Have similar GPA and 35 ACT here in NY but still “ready for review”. No request or link for first quarter grades (did well) on Minerva.
So I just now checked again and it looks like I’ll have to send in a mid-year report. It’s super frustrating but it’s not too bad I guess. I really wish I could submit my first quarter grades so I wouldn’t have to wait though.
Son got Accepted pending final results today
IB diploma in US 3.9 unweighted
34 ACT
Congratulations to those who have been accepted!
Unlike previous years, there does not seem to be a clear, predictable pattern to these early acceptances. I wonder what is causing the inconsistencies this year? Just different app readers? In the end it likely won’t matter, as the high stat applicants should all eventually be accepted; I just find it curious.
@ShrimpBurrito Part of it is dependent on which faculty…part of it is who posts on CC. Last year in the end it seemed like they stayed true to the minima they published. 20 kids from my son’s HS outside of Boston were accepted to McGill (I think 8 are there)…my son said almost everyone had to submit first semester grades…even the really high GPA kids. The process seems really odd as you go through it. Hang tough.
And yes, I’ll be lurking all year…my youngest son (a HS junior) has McGill as his first choice. He has stayed in the McGill dorms twice this year with his brother and is just completely in love with the school.
