What's with McGill having such high acceptance rate but still one of the best colleges?
is it one of those easy to get in & hard to get out schools?

What is the acceptance rate?

wondering the same thing as cc_214

The acceptance rate is ~48%.
A large part of that is because students from Qu

way harder for US students too. also depends on what faculty your talking. science is badass and is harder to get into overall. McGill is awesome though.

Do you know the acceptance rate on the music school? Considering applying there for voice performance. THANKS.

Yes, what’s the acceptance rate for voice performance for undergrad and grad? (I have a bachelor’s degree in an non-music field, so I don’t know if they’d take me for grad school).

I’m an American, by the way.

Canadian universities admit based on Grade 12 marks. This way, people who won’t get into McGill don’t bother applying.

Also keep in mind that top students will also go to other schools like UBC and UToronto.

Canada has 10% the population of the US. The US had Canada’s population in the 1860s, so comparison is far from rational. Lower student population = less demand. Also, Canadian schools are pretty standardized so top students are spread around all over the country, despite what this website leads you to believe.

Hi,
Do you know what’s the approximate actual GPA needed to get into 3 schools: Pharmacology, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at McGill? Will it be very much higher than the minimum GPA required as indicated in their website (CGPA 3, GPA for the last 2 years 3.2)?
Thanks for your help?

didn’t know science was that hard! glad that i got in

I go to US public high school in nj (but not american citizen)

for those whos applying next year and want some info about Faculty of Science, my stats are

uw gpa - 3.7 ish
wgpa - 4.4 ish

SAT - 740/770/670 (CR/M/W)
SAT II - Bio-E 780 / Chem 780 / MatII 800

AP Bio - 5 junior year / AP Chem, Stat, Calc BC senior year

senior year grades (which i believe is important for mcgill) - 1 b+ for chem, rest A for first marking period / all a or a- for second and midterm

sent in high school resume (required by guidance when sending transcript) that included bio research for 3 years on genetics, microbiology, and environment. Bunch of regional/ state science awards.

and yes i think minimum criteria does weed out many applicants along with canada being smaller in population contributes to high acceptance rate

I have applied to Mcgill university for fall 2013 for PHD in health care operations and information management.
I hv 69.23% during my UG (India), 69% during my PG ( frm UK)
my GRE score is 1030
nd GPA fr my msc is 3.83

cn ny1 plz tel me my chances of acceptace from mcgill with this profile?

thanks.

hiii
im a student from india
i have a 4.0 gpa in 10th
and a 70% in 11th (assuming still in 11th)
my 11th grades are low but will definately improve in my 12th
.
.
and im a commerce student with entreprenuership and no maths
i would love to do bba

@msuhail Your 11th scores are a little low. Technically McGill’s threshold score for applying is 60% but you need a lot more than the threshold score to get accepted.

Also, how did you convert your 10th marks into GPA? Indian schools don’t really use 4 point GPA scales. It would be better if you expressed your marks in terms of percentage like you did for 11th.

Overall I would say you would have a tough time getting into McGill. I suggest you take the SAT and SAT II Subject Tests and score more than 2000 (in SAT) and close to 800 in the SAT IIs to up your chances.

I am also an Indian and was accepted by McGill to the Faculty of Arts this year. My scores were:

SAT I: 2170 (CR: 740, M: 740, W: 690)
SAT II: 800 (Physics), 790 (Math Level 2)
My High School (Syllabus: ICSE/ISC, Science) percentages are:
9th - 88%
10th - 91%
11th - 86%
12th - 90%

In fact, the bar is lower for Qc students; after all, like it or not, it’s still a state school. At the same time, in-province students will often try to stay as close to home as possible if their local university has the major they want. However, if the student lives in a rural region, out of any conceivable commuting reach from a university, or if they desire to major in something not offered locally (pharmacy, dental medicine, medicine are common first choices among that crowd), then they may want to go residential.

The bar is low enough for any reasonably good, hard-working, in-province student to get in provided they choose the right major. In fact, it’s a lot more common for in-province transfers to do so because they want a specific major not offered at their old university than to move up the prestige ladder.

@upapilot I was excepted to mcgill faculty of arts sometime ago and im an Indian too :). See you in August!!
@msuhail a 70% in 11th is a little low. You should work hard and improve your grade 12 scores. Anyways good luck! and post your decision :)

@Sandy30 Great! Congrats! I’ll probably be enrolling in the the inter-faculty BA/BSc program and not the Arts faculty.

BTW did you apply for the Major Undergrad Entrance Scholarship? Got your decision yet?

@upapilot i got the 3000$ entrance scholarship…My status is still pending for other major awards…
regardless i will be seeing you in fall :D

I also applied to Mcgill; PhD Mechanical Engineering and also PhD Electrical and Computer Engineering. My application is still in review for over two months now. Here are my stats.;
Undergraduate (Nigerian) CGPA: 4.52/5.00
A British Masters degree (Ranked top 20, QS Ranking): 66%
Any chance I will be accepted?
