McGill is 12th in the WORLD?!?!

Times Higher Education

Am I reading this right? It beat Stanford and Berkeley!!

... not this again

lol explain

oh dear...poor child.

Same study just came out, McGill down to #20.

No bid deal, we don't see it at the undergraduate level.

Yeah...the reason why McGill is ever so high is that it gets a lot of citations (Profs write a lot of papers).

However, this is also the reason why many top universities are "top". For example, the Ivies are good, not neccessarily because they have good etachers, but because they release so many good papers (with the loads of money that they have) and get citations all over the world. This is also the reason why US universities are so much better than the rest. In the US, to get tenure, you need to publish like crazy. In the UK (where my father was, he was in the US as well), you don't need to publish that much to get tenure. Therefore, it is no mystery as to why US universities are so recognized: because of their research.

McGill spends all of it money on research (that they sometimes neglect their students) so that it can be recognized. That's it. You can analyze the THES, and find that a large portion of it is peer review, which is where all this fuss is coming from.
