McGill or Tulane?

I’m caught in a major dillemma.
I got into both McGill Desautels and Tulane. I live in NYC and don’t like winter and I know Montreal in winter is way worse than even in NYC. Weather is clearly better in NOLA but it’s also incredibly humid and I hate humidity and rain. I love Montreal and I love New Orleans. I speak no French at all but I love the city of Montreal so much. I don’t like the McGill campus or dorms that much however I would still be happy there. At Tulane, I fell in love with the campus but I don’t really know if I’ll fit in here. While this might be a generalization, everyone seems to be a white basic suburban. However at McGill people seemed to express themselves more, they dressed better, etc. help!!!
I literally cannot decide.

Are the costs comparable?

From your expression “white basic suburban”, my guess is that you are not? The large Canadian cities, such as Montreal, are an amalgam of different cultures. It is very easy to fit in and be accepted. If that is a concern, I would go with McGill.

The problem with McGill is that, outside of Canada, no one’s heard of it (or outside the academy). Tulane isn’t as highly ranked but it’s in the U.S. and very well regarded. I’d go to Tulane but I’m a bit biased toward private schools. I’ve been to McGill a few times and wasn’t fond of the campus.

@SeattleTW How has nobody heard of Mcgill? Its one of the top ranked schools in the entire world. It has an amazing reputation all over the world, wherever you go.

Ask any kid in high school…

Cost has no impact. They will cost exactly the same amount after the merit scholarship that I got to tulane and the international tuition fees at McGill

Ah yes! the source of all knowledge!!!

Let’s put it this way. I’ve lectured at a few high schools and gone to my share of bars and cocktail receptions and brand recognition does mean something, even coming from the less educated, especially the older one gets…

How independent are you? Motivated? The first year of courses at McGill is brutal and nobody’s going to help you- you’re on your own. If you want a bit more hand holding, go to Tulane. Also, Montreal winters are on another level. They’re extreme. Maybe not the best choice for someone who hates the cold.

“The problem with McGill is that, outside of Canada, no one’s heard of it (or outside the academy).”

You also feel that Udub is better than Berkeley for CS.

UW CS is a gateway to the riches of the PNW. Cal, not so much…

Cal is the gateway to Silicon Valley.

Uh, nope, LSJU is…

This isn’t relevant. You guys can chat privately about this if you want. I just want feedback on my question

What are your plans after university/college? What career do you want? Where do you want to live?

Did you get into a specific program at Tulane?

There is an invention called air conditioning.

When u choose McGill and you’re freezing your butt off on some Tuesday in February, it’ll be Mardi Gras in New Orleans.

I doubt you’ll be going to many fancy formal balls up North the way you will in New Orleans: Carnival balls for a 2 week stretch. The Audubon Zoo To Do. Plus a constant stream of festivals year round.

If you hate humid and rain then go to McGill and have spring break at NOLA. Take advantage of the cheap Canadian dollar. I kind of agree with one CC member who posted that all the students she knew from her high school transferred out of Tulane. Same thing happened to some of the high school kids at our high school. One kid transferred to Rice. Maybe you should check out the retention rate at Tulane.

That’s sad because I always thought Tulane was vastly underrated.

Here’s a thought: McGill, despite its relative obscurity in America, is the second best school in the 51st state, after Toronto, especially in engineering.

Accordingly, consider living in Vancouver, perhaps the most beautiful city north of the border. That way you’ll be the top of the heap, get a great job, and can visit Seattle on the weekends.

Why would you visit Seatlle when you have the magnificence of BC all around you? Washington State is nice, but BC is perhaps the most gorgeous area in all of North America.

No if Op hates rain and humidity, visit Southern Cal where the sunshine is plenty and we are in a drought. Not a chance of rain.
