Trying to make a decision. Got accepted into McGill and UIUC for Chemical Engineering for Fall 2019. Which university has a stronger ChemE program and internships? I know that McGiill is world class but so is UIUC. Insight needed before commiting.
Is cost a matter?
McGill would be less expensive because of duo-citizen, but that is not the most important thing. Are there internship opportunities in the US for McGill ChemE students? Concerned that most internships are in Quebec and language would limit opportunities.
McGill will have internships opportunities across Canada, and probably in the US , too. The student body at McGill is about 10% American, and they tend to try to accommodate that significant minority. I am more familiar with the business school(Desautels) which definitely has students doing internships in the US.
BIL got his PHD from UIUC in ChemE. Got his first job in Silicon Valley, and never looked back. Outstanding program. I would tend to say that it would be the stronger school for ChemE, but McGill is still good.
The ambiance between the two schools is quite different also. One is a Big 10 school in a small midwestern, very flat city, and the other is right in the middle of an interesting, old, cosmopolitan city, part way up a small mountain. Figure out where you would rather be.
Most ENG school students that I know(especially the ones who went to good schools) don’t worry too much about internships, and just worry about surviving the very rigorous course load. When you graduate, getting a job won’t be a problem.
